Summary

  • A potential sequel to Jujutsu Kaisen could feature new powerful characters and techniques.
  • The sequel could explore unanswered questions from the original series, including Kenjaku's plan and Yuji's Domain.
  • The main cast of Jujutsu Kaisen could return as teachers in a sequel, providing closure and mentorship roles.

It would be an understatement to say that the conclusion to the beloved Jujutsu Kaisen story was divisive. Although there were many fans who were outright disappointed and many who liked it, the objective truth of the matter was that there were still some aspects to the much-awaited finale that were rushed or just simply weren't expanded upon properly. This is why the finale met a ton of criticism upon its release.

However, despite the ambiguous ending, unexplained concepts, and rushed battles, some fans think that these were all deliberate choices by Gege Akutami in order to pave the way for a sequel to Jujutsu Kaisen. Despite the mixed reviews that the finale of the franchise received, most fans are in agreement that many of the problems with it could be fixed with a sequel, so let's take a look at what this could look like and why it would make sense.

A New Cast Of Characters And Techniques Await

An Expansion of the World

  • A potential new series would feature new characters with powerful techniques.
  • Some old techniques would reincarnate through these new sorcerers.

The characters of Jujutsu Kaisen are the best part of the series for many due to the impact they have made ever since their first appearance. This can be seen with the face of the franchise, Satoru Gojo, who went on to become arguably the most iconic anime character of the modern era with his striking design and electric personality. Similarly, Yuji has gone down as one of the most beloved shonen protagonists of the modern day.

So for a potential sequel, a whole new cast would be present, since it would likely be set many years in the future. This would give an exciting opportunity for the series to introduce new and powerful techniques that would work perfectly with the existing ones in the story, or some of the strongest techniques could also manifest in new characters. A brilliant way this can be done is by having a new member of the Gojo clan become one of the central protagonists in this sequel.

This has been a very popular theory regarding the sequel for quite some time now. If the new series is set around 16 years in the future, the main character could be a member of the Gojo clan who was also born with Limitless and the Six Eyes, similar to Satoru, but will need help in mastering his powers, which is where Jujutsu High would come in. Here, many fans think that Yuji, due to being the strongest of his time, would serve as the mentor figure, tying up his relationship with Satoru beautifully by becoming the teacher to his successor.

Similarly, many think another character could be born with Sukuna's technique as an inheritor of the King of Curses. However, this time, they would serve the role of one of the main trio of sorcerers, which would be an amazing way to complete Sukuna's story as well, since this would show how he would have turned out if he had someone else on his level as well as those who were there for him. This would further reinforce Gojo's belief that bringing up others to be strong enough won out in the end over Sukuna's reliance on himself.

Jujutsu Kaisen is a series where strength is incredibly important, although there are some characters who are all bark and no bite!

An Answer To The Biggest Mysteries At The End Of Jujutsu Kaisen

A Resolution To Some Events

  • The original series ended with quite a few unanswered questions.
  • The sequel could explore these mysteries.

Perhaps the biggest gripe that fans had with the ending of Jujutsu Kaisen was that it was rushed, due to which many of the most important questions were left unanswered in a way that almost ensured a sequel would be released. Among the biggest plot points behind the main arcs of the series was Kenjaku's plan, where he sought to merge the entire population of Japan into a singular, all-powerful Cursed Spirit.

The Shibuya Incident and Culling Game arcs were initiated only to see what this merger would end up looking like to answer Kenjaku's morbid curiosity. However, it never came to pass, since both he and Sukuna were defeated before anything could be done about it, which felt like a massive waste to many fans since they believed that such incredible build-up eventually ended without an answer. A potential sequel to the series could explore this merger, with this Cursed Spirit serving as the main villain at the end.

Regret, huh? I forgot what that feels like.

This seems to be the logical next step, especially considering the mastermind behind its inception, Kenjaku, may still be alive. In the epilogue, Takaba was revealed to have survived his battle and was seen speaking to someone about the joys of comedy. This was perhaps the most damning evidence for a sequel since this person was most likely Kenjaku, as they still had the body of Suguru Geto, but their face was covered with speech bubbles. Many felt that Gege would never have included this detail if it was never going to be explored.

Another mystery deals with Yuji's long-awaited, but unfortunately unexplained, Domain Expansion. Seeing as how this is the greatest form of Cursed Energy manipulation and the height of Jujutsu sorcery, fans had always been expecting Yuji to master it by the end of the series. Although he did, the specifications of his Domain were never revealed, which was one of the greatest disappointments of Jujutsu Kaisen. However, many feel that a sequel would finally provide the details for Yuji's Domain, as well as an answer to many other unanswered mysteries.

The Return Of The Main Cast And Their New Roles In The Sequel

From Students To Teachers

  • The main cast of Jujutsu Kaisen will return at their strongest states.
  • They will now have the roles of teachers.

Although the main trio of the series would be different for a potential sequel, the old cast would return in very cool ways. The best thing would be, as stated earlier, if the main character was the inheritor of the Limitless and Six Eyes, acting as sort of a reincarnation of Gojo, with Yuji stepping in the role of his late mentor to teach this new character, and their allies, the ways of the Jujutsu world.

Similarly, Megumi and Nobara would also feature in this new series heavily, embodying roles similar to those of characters like Shoko and Nanami, who were students alongside Gojo back in the day but weren't nearly as strong as him, though they were still indispensable to Jujutsu High. Similarly, other supporting characters would act the same way as teachers for the Kyoto branch or just powerful sorcerers hunting down curses.

My student's watching, so I'm going to show off a little!

The possibilities truly are endless and would give a great sense of closure to see how the characters are doing years after the defeat of Sukuna. If new characters are introduced as students many years down the line, then it would make perfect sense to have the old characters as mentors who are in their prime, chief of which would be Yuji as the new strongest sorcerer in the world, and Megumi, who may finally have mastered his Ten Shadows Technique by taming Mahoraga.

The world of Jujutsu Kaisen is filled with incredible opportunities to tell a new story in a familiar setting, which would definitely go down as one of the better anime sequels if handled correctly. There are many unanswered questions that seem to have been placed by Gege Akutami deliberately so that a sequel happens, so only time will tell if Jujutsu Kaisen will ever get a follow-up.

One Piece can be streamed on Crunchyroll and Amazon Prime.
