In the world of manga, Jujutsu Kaisen has shown incredible levels of dominance over the last few years. Even before the series received an anime adaptation, Jujutsu Kaisen was incredibly popular. However, after the anime, the JJK series went on to reach sky-high levels of popularity, matched only by a handful. Jujutsu Kaisen became so big that, for three years, it was declared the best-selling manga in Japan, and it almost managed to retain this title for 4 years in a row.
Better Than Jujutsu Kaisen: Gege Akutami's New Manga Is The King of Next Gen Series
JJK Modulo has proven Gege's growth - it's definitely the best new gen manga at the moment.
However, Jujutsu Kaisen ended in late 2024, and that opened up the door for other manga to dethrone it. Surprisingly enough, Jujutsu Kaisen is still one of the best-selling series this year, but nowhere near number 1. In 2025, One Piece retakes its spot as Japan’s best-selling manga, something that it hadn't claimed since 2019 following the major success of Demon Slayer. One Piece has been dominating this year, and this will likely stay the case until the next major hit comes around.
Jujutsu Kaisen Was The Best Selling Manga In 2024
Jujutsu Kaisen is definitely a massive series that gained tremendous traction over the last 5 years. So much so that it was able to compete with manga’s biggest hits. Jujutsu Kaisen started in 2018, but it really took off in 2020, when it was finally adapted into an anime.
The anime by Studio Mappa was an incredible adaptation of Gege Akutami’s manga, and great animation and direction usually put the series on everybody’s radar.
Jujutsu Kaisen became so big that in 2021, the series would go on to become the best-selling manga of the year. Jujutsu Kaisen became one of the few series to snatch that title away from One Piece. Its reign would continue after that. It was the most sold manga again in 2022, and in 2023, it was a close second, just behind Blue Lock. In 2024, the series would rise once again for a third and last time, becoming the best-selling manga of the year again.
Finally, JJK ended in late 2024, and while it's still been impressive since as far as sales are concerned, fans know that it won't reach similar heights. In 2025, it was officially surpassed once again by One Piece.
One Piece is The Best Selling Manga In 2025
Jujustu Kaisen’s reign lasted for a few years. From 2021 to 2024, it managed to outsell One Piece every single time, which is very impressive. 2025, however, is the year of One Piece.
While the year isn’t completely over yet, the numbers have made it clear that no other series can catch up to it anymore. At the moment, One Piece has blown past all competition this year, and it recently had its 113th volume release as well, which means it'll only increase the gap even further.
It's Time To Welcome The Next Gol D. Roger in One Piece
Roger's successor has been revealed, and it's not Luffy in One Piece.
This is a massive win for One Piece, but of course, if Jujutsu Kaisen were still ongoing, this could’ve turned out completely differently.
Jujutsu Kaisen still has a shot to compete with One Piece in 2026 with its sequel manga, Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo. Modulo is a short manga, though, and will likely only be 2 or 3 volumes long.
One Piece Goes Back To The Top After 7 Years
One Piece has definitely not been at its peak in the last few years. 2025 is the first time since 2018 that One Piece has earned the title of best-selling manga of the year in Japan. It took 7 years for One Piece to go back to the top again, and it needed some of its competitors to end, such as Demon Slayer or Jujutsu Kaisen.
“I Don’t Want To Conquer Anything. I Just Think The Guy With The Most Freedom In The Entire Ocean Is The Pirate King.”
One Piece sales have definitely decreased overall, but it seems that things are picking up again with Elbaf. Fatigue with older series is normal, and the fact that One Piece has maintained such a huge fanbase over 3 decades is something only a few series could ever achieve. One Piece will likely continue its domination in 2026 as well, unless some other major series bursts onto the scene.
