Power scaling is a tricky thing in anime like Jujutsu Kaisen, when characters like the overpowered Satoru Gojo break all the rules. At first, Jujutsu Kaisen fans took it for granted that Satoru is the world's strongest sorcerer, since the characters themselves said so. Satoru reinforced that notion with his easy defeat of Jogo's Domain Expansion in Season 1. In the following season, it took all Mahito and his friends had just to seal Satoru away. Yet Satoru was indeed taken down, leaving Yuji Itadori alone as the Culling Games loomed.

The first question on anime fans' minds is whether, and how, Yuji will make do in the absence of his famously powerful sorcerer mentor. Yuji has never been this alone, and he even has former hero Yuta Okkotsu hunting him while Kenjaku's sinister plans unfold. Despite all that, Jujutsu Kaisen fans have faith that Yuji will not only get by without Satoru around, but actually grow into Satoru's role and even surpass it. Due to what Jujutsu Kaisen fans have seen in the anime so far, not to mention the typical rules of shonen power scaling, Yuji is set to fill Satoru's shoes and make the world forget Satoru was ever #1.

Jujutsu Kaisen: The Strongest Characters In Season 3, Ranked

Season 3 of Jujutsu Kaisen is set to be filled with some of the strongest characters in the series, so let's break down who they are.

Yuji Itadori is the Strongest and Only Half-Other Sorcerer in the Anime

Yuji's Jujutsu Power is Growing at a Terrifying Rate

Even in the Jujutsu Kaisen anime alone, viewers have seen ample evidence that Yuji Itadori is set to eventually eclipse Satoru Gojo as the top sorcerer. On one hand, Yuji cannot beat Satoru at his own game, since infinity is, by definition, impossible to overcome. Yuji isn't going to wield his own infinity-based power or become OP in the same way Satoru is, but he doesn't have to. It helps how author Gege Akutami himself doesn't like Satoru's unfair, plot-warping power and was clearly eager to make room for Yuji to assume the #1 spot after Satoru's capture in Shibuya. Yuji cannot surpass Satoru as a 1:1 replica of him, but Yuji could surpass Satoru by combining all his other -- often unique -- assets.

Yuji may be more of a "normal" sorcerer than Satoru Gojo is, but he's still not a truly ordinary sorcerer thanks to Ryomen Sukuna's presence inside him. Yuji's and Sukuna's relationship has been contentious and bloody since the start, but there's no denying how Sukuna's presence inside Yuji gave him some terrifying and effective advantages. No matter Sukuna's brutality and uncooperative nature, his mere status as King of Curses makes him Yuji's secret weapon. It may be one reason why Satoru himself admitted that Yuji may surpass him, combined with Yuji's own remarkable potential. That's not a guarantee, since comments like that aren't always perfect prophecies in anime, but it's enough to get the conversation going.

Aside from Sukuna's titanic power, Yuji also has the gift of immense physical power that's augmented even further with his curse energy. In that way, Yuji can at least catch up to Satoru's own curse-infused martial arts, and being a mere 15 years old, Yuji has ample time to keep training and surpass Satoru in that arena. It also helps how Yuji has become a melting pot of curse techniques and powers. These range from the Black Flash he learned from Aoi Todo to blood manipulation, his self-healing via a Reverse Curse Technique, and Shrine, among others.

When combined, those powers not only allows Yuji to catch up with or even eclipse Satoru in the post-Shibuya era, it establishes Yuji's habit of growth. Far more so than Satoru Gojo or even his classmates at school, Yuji has the unparalleled ability to observe, learn, and apply almost any technique. These abilities and traits make Yuji remarkably flexible, which in turn makes it challenging for even the toughest curses or sorcerers to figure out a counter for Yuji's combat strategy. Mahito and his fellow curses knew what to do when aiming to capture Satoru, but they couldn't do such a thing for Yuji.

Jujutsu Kaisen's protagonist gets stronger and expands his arsenal with each fight, and that is clearly what Satoru meant when singing high praise for Yuji's endless potential. That's the kind of infinity that may someday put Satoru's own to shame, and it's exactly the kind of infinity that fans would expect from any shonen protagonist.

Satoru Gojo and Other Supporting Heroes Are Meant to be Surpassed

On a more meta level, it's more likely than ever that Yuji will indeed become stronger than Satoru by Jujutsu Kaisen's end. At the very least, Yuji is on track to become the world's #1 sorcerer in Satoru's absence, making Yuji stronger than Satoru by default. If Satoru is imprisoned or dead, then his infinite power means nothing. When it comes to outclassing Satoru's infinity power directly, that's the best and possibly only way to surpass Satoru's strength. But there is more to a powerful sorcerer than the sheer scale of OP nature of particular cursed techniques.

The meta comparisons of Yuji and Satoru strongly signal Yuji's success in becoming top dog one day, whether Satoru lives or dies in Jujutsu Kaisen's anime. This is hardly the first shonen anime to treat power levels not just according to in-universe physics, but also storytelling norms. Anime like Jujutsu Kaisen and its kin blend in-universe powers and the needs of an inspiring story, which is indeed where the famed "power of friendship" comes from. Yuji benefits more from the power of friendship than Satoru does, as Aoi Todo can attest to, but there's still more to it. There's also the narrative of the relatable student eventually surpassing the mighty yet stale mentor.

Gojo is arguably the strongest sorcerer in history, and these overpowered moments prove it.

In many ways, Yuji the protagonist has already one-upped Satoru when all factors are weighed in, and Yuji might and certainly should go even further. Just like Naruto Uzumaki, Ichigo Kurosaki, Deku, and Tanjiro Kamado, Yuji Itadori has plot powers. The narrative itself wants Yuji to grow stronger over time until he has made his mentors obsolete. By contrast, villains and mentors alike are stale, starting off with immense power that merely challenges the hero to keep growing. Satoru Gojo fills that role, being vastly superior to Yuji at first but also failing to grow significantly.

After a point, the likes of Satoru Gojo are just a bar for the hero clear, and they often want it that way. Gojo is strong so Yuji knows how to be even stronger, and that's the way shonen should be -- or else the hero's growth arc feels like an exercise in futility. Despite his many heartbreaking moments and losses, though, there is nothing futile about how far Yuji has come, and how much farther he may still go.
