Even though the original series of Dexter wrapped up in 2013, there is a lot of buzz surrounding the iconic television series right now. That's because work is underway on a sequel series, Dexter: Resurrection, which will see Michael C. Hall and several other legacy characters return to the franchise alongside a host of new stars. The likes of Neil Patrick Harris, Peter Dinklage, and Eric Stonestreet are all joining the upcoming series, which has put much attention back onto the original.
This is one of the reasons why Dexter was brought back to Netflix in the United States, with the popular streaming service looking to capitalize on the buzz. In June 2024, it was unexpectedly put back on Netflix after a four-year gap, after the original deal with Showtime from the 2010s expired. But now, a new decision regarding the hit crime drama has been made.
Dexter: Resurrection Must Avoid This Mistake The Show Has Made Twice
Dexter: Resurrection needs to avoid repeating past mistakes within this franchise to keep it going.
Despite the popularity of Dexter and the fact that a spin-off is coming, What's On Netflix has revealed that Dexter is going to be leaving Netflix on June 19, 2025. That means fans only have a few days to follow Dexter Morgan's story as he balances being a serial killer with his day job of being a blood spatter analyst. However, there is some good news as Dexter will remain on Netflix internationally, at least for now. It is believed that all international territories, such as the United Kingdom, might lose Dexter by March 31, 2026.
The decision to remove Dexter after just one year will surprise many fans, especially given the timing. On top of that, Dexter's re-addition to Netflix proved to be a popular decision, as the series pulled in 1.01 billion viewing hours on the streaming platform, which equates to 94.80 million views. That proves that the show still has a dedicated audience who want to engage with the original series, while there are undoubtedly a number of brand-new fans who will only be exposed to the show in 2025.
The report added that they suspect Paramount has licensed the show, just as it has previously done for Yellowjackets. This is something that is done to try and boost interest in their shows, with the ultimate desire being that people will move onto Paramount+. That platform is the 'home' of the Dexter franchise, as Dexter: New Blood and Dexter: Original Sin can both be found on Paramount+, while Dexter: Resurrection will also end up being on that platform.
This will likely be disappointing news for people who may have been hoping to binge-watch Dexter before the new show is released to catch up on the storyline. It will also upset fans who just enjoy watching the show regularly, with the viewing figures showcasing that there is a genuine audience. It's a blow to Netflix as the show is drawing significant figures, but that's the nature of streaming content. Dexter fans needn't fear too much about its impending Netflix departure, as history has shown the streaming platform is willing to bring the show back.
