A new Kickstarter game called GearGrit features visuals and mechanics that are clearly inspired by the popular PlayStation 2 title Jak 2. The project is mainly being developed by two people, and thanks to Kickstarter contributors, the action-platformer indie inspired by Jak 2 has already been funded.

Jak 2 is the second entry in the popular Jak and Daxter series, released for the PlayStation 2 in 2003 and developed by Naughty Dog. This installment moved away from the tone of its predecessor, introducing a darker approach and a semi-open world that players can explore using various vehicles—leading many to compare Jak 2 to Grand Theft Auto. Alongside its platforming-based levels, the game also features multiple firing modes and a mission structure that players follow throughout the game's city. Over the years, Jak 2 reached cult classic status, and now an indie developer is bringing some of its ideas into a new title.

GearGrit is an indie action-platformer that has been in development since 2023 and is now raising money through Kickstarter. The first of its four goals, “Funded,” was already achieved with $25,000. The game’s story follows Tansy Geargrit, a character who’s wrongly accused of a crime and becomes an enemy of the state. Players will need to “blast your way through GearGrit” and explore its semi-open world, which the developer confirms is inspired by PlayStation 2 games.

Jak 2-Inspired GearGrit Release Window Set for December 2027

GearGrit brings back several elements from the Jak and Daxter series—especially Jak 2—promising an engaging platforming experience focused on movement, allowing players to build momentum through various jumps, spins, and more. It also features satisfying combat that combines melee attacks with ranged weapon mechanics. Other features will include optional challenge modes, time trials, vehicle racing, and a Wanted system, where security forces pursue players after they commit crimes.

Even though the game has already reached its first Kickstarter goal, fundraising will continue for 26 more days (until June 1), with three additional tiers yet to be unlocked. These tiers include a Hair Salon ($30,000), New Game++ with new challenges ($35,000), and customizable vehicles ($40,000) - the developer is also brainstorming additional features if the campaign surpasses that mark. Those who contribute to the development of this game inspired by PlayStation 2 titles can receive both physical and digital rewards. GearGrit is currently targeting a release window of December 2027, though the developer has noted that delays are possible.
