In an announcement at the Gamescom convention in Cologne, Germany, developer Illfonic has confirmed that it will co-develop and publish Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game, an upcoming multiplayer horror game. Another company, Good Shepherd Entertainment, was originally set to publish the game, which is based on the 1988 cult classic horror film Killer Klowns from Outer Space, though they are now handing the project off.

When the project was first announced at last year's Gamescom, many fans were skeptical about the adaptation of Killer Klowns, of all franchises, into a video game. Even so, subsequent trailers and announcements about the developing title have garnered significant excitement, as the game has been revealed to be a 3 vs 7 asymmetrical survival horror experience, akin to titles like Friday the 13th: The Game or Dead by Daylight.

In an announcement to the press at Gamescom, it was revealed that publishing and co-development of this upcoming title has been turned over to Illfonic, a studio which has released several games similar to Killer Klowns, including Friday the 13th: The Game, Predator: Hunting Grounds and Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed. In addition to continuously developing Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed, Illfonic has also supported development on a number of major games like Crysis 3 and Evolve to name a few. Now, it appears that the studio will now be adding Killer Klowns from Outer Space to its ever growing list.

Speaking at Gamescom, Illfonic CEO and co-founder Charles Brungardt expressed his excitement to be involved with this new project. He said that he and his colleagues have been excited to get involved with Killer Klowns from Outer Space, an IP they are longtime fans of, and that the team at former publisher Good Shepherd Games have "made the handoff process of this project enjoyable." Brungardt said he wants to create an experience that the community of horror fans can "truly immerse themselves in," a goal which goes hand in hand with the previous developers' commitment to staying true to the original Killer Klowns movie with their adaptation.

Given that asymmetric horror games based on classic 1980s film franchises seem to be Illfonic's preferred niche, given how many such titles the studio has worked on, fans who were looking forward to Killer Klowns from Outer Space will likely be reassured by news of the company's involvement. While no launch date has been announced, and the game's website still lists a release window of "early 2023" which has arguably passed, development is evidently in progress, and players can still sign up for the Killer Klowns beta to get an early taste of the game.

Killer Klowns From Outer Space: The Game is coming soon for PC, Playstation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
