Thanks to the Brushes with Death DLC for Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, Henry is now able to get his shields painted, adding even more customization and flavor to the game. While this is just a small part of the story-based expansion, it feels great to decorate shields with period-accurate colors, designs, and even symbols that can be unlocked. This guide will show players where to get their shields painted in KCD2 and everything they need to know about the process.

Where To Get Shields Painted In Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2

To be able to have Henry's shields painted, players must first start the Brushes with Death DLC, and one requirement is to have completed the For Whom The Bell Tolls main quest. After this, they should see a purple marker on the map, just south of Trosky Castle. Encountering the painter Voyta will trigger the Sketchy Situation quest, and players will need to find his brushes and return them.

Once Master Votya is back in his workshop inside Trosky Castle, players can approach him during the day. Henry can ask 'How does shield painting work?' Or choose the 'Paint a shield for me' option.

Eventually, the DLC will progress to Kuttenberg, and so players will be able to find Votya in his city workshop.

There should be a purple paintbrush icon for Votya after completing the Sketchy Situation quest.

How Does Shield Painting Work In Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2?

Players will need to have a shield with them already in their inventory, and it can either be blank or already painted. There are four types of shields in KCD2: Cuman, Heater, Knight, and Pavese. Upon asking to have their shield painted by Votya, players will select one of their shields and submit it.

Shields can typically be bought from carpenters and some armorers, or found elsewhere.

From here on out, it's all about design and customization. When you're happy with the shield, press 'Accept change' at the bottom. This is all completely free as Votya is in Henry's debt. Players can keep coming back to get more shields painted, and there's even an option to have him restore the shield's original design.

Here's a walkthrough leading players to Master Schindel's Toys in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2.

Designing The Shield

Players have four different features to customize, and all changes can be seen in real time, similarly to getting a haircut in KCD2.

  • Pattern: The pattern is the 'field' in heraldry, essentially a background, perhaps a cross or a horizontal split.
  • Colors I & II: These colors are for the pattern.
  • Categories & Symbols: Under different categories, such as Animals & Historical, players will find symbols to adorn their shields. For example, two fish or the Moravian Eagle.

The design options use real terminology from medieval heraldry. For example, 'Goat Sable' refers to a black goat. Additionally, check out the Pavese Shield for unique symbols.

Unlocking New Shield Symbols

By completing quests throughout the base game and possible future DLCs, Henry will unlock new symbols to have painted on his shields. Often, these symbols will be tied to the quest or a character in some way.

Keep an eye out for future mods with new symbols, as this seems likely.

Thankfully, upon completing returning Votya's brushes, players will automatically receive symbols for quests they have already completed.
