Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is arguably the most historically accurate game ever made. However, it is nevertheless still a game, with gameplay and practicality always coming first. Therefore, there are a few historical inaccuracies in KCD2, but in almost all of the cases, Warhorse Studios has talked about these changes to history and explained their decision.
10 Reasons Why Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Could Win Game Of The Year
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is an early frontrunner to win Game of the Year in 2025. Here's what makes the game so great.
The game's incredible codex, which is full of medieval information and facts about Kuttenberg and the rest of Bohemia, also explains some of these historical inaccuracies. Thus, the aim of this article is not to poke holes in the masterpiece that is Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, but rather to make players aware of what is real and what is not, allowing them to learn about the Middle Ages.
Some Historical Events & Characters Have Been Moved Around
This Was Done To Give The Story More Structure
Real-life events don't always have a nicely structured beginning, middle, and climactic end with time for character arcs. Therefore, historical events and some deaths had to be moved around to give the two Kingdom Come: Deliverance games a more satisfying story, beginning with the ransacking of Henry's village, Skalitz, and then ending with him lifting the siege of Suchdol.
However, historically, the siege of Suchdol occurred at the end of 1402, rather than the summer of 1403, and even had a different outcome, with the Prague siegers being successful. Markvart von Aulitz (Markvart of Ulice) did indeed die during this siege. However, that means he wasn't alive for the raid on Skalitz in the spring of 1403 and the rest of the two KCD2 games. Hans Capon (Jan Ptacek of Pirkstejn) would also have only been around 15 at the time, but he was aged up to 20 and included in important events for the sake of a great game. All of these characters have their own codex entries in KCD2.
There Are No Children, Which Also Means No Child Items Or Clothing
They Are Absent Due To How Long & Expensive It Would Be To Make New Models & Animations
The lack of children is not a historical inaccuracy of KCD2 per se, but more of an understandable dip in immersion. There are two main reasons why they were not included. Firstly, new character models would need to be made, along with clothing, as well as animations, including those for adult NPCs who might bend or look down to speak to a child, all of which takes time and money.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 - Real Life Locations You Can Visit
Many of the structures and locations in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 are still standing, and fans can visit them in Czechia.
Secondly, in a game where almost any NPC can be killed, the presence of children is more problematic, especially if players were able to use mods to disable existing protections. However, their absence also means that there are no historical items associated with medieval children. For example, when entering a house, the full picture is not painted due to a lack of cradles, toys, and children's clothes, all of which would naturally have meant more work.
A Lack Of Tight Spiral Staircases & Small Castle Doors
These Aren't Great With Video Game Cameras & Controls
Aside from one or two inside the Italian Court, there are practically no spiral staircases in KCD2, despite them being a historically popular way to save space and stone in a castle. The developers, however, have stated that their omission is on purpose, as these tight spaces would make gameplay, especially combat, clunky.
Even in first person, these spiral staircases wouldn't be great to navigate, and with the world being full of NPCs going about their business, Henry could easily end up stuck. For similar reasons, there also aren't a lot of small castle doors and other similar architectural features. All of these, however, have been replaced with authentic alternatives.
A Jewish Quarter & Synagogue Didn't Exist In Kuttenberg In 1403
However, Many Medieval Cities Did Have Jewish Quarters
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 does a great job of depicting how culturally diverse Europe was in the Middle Ages, with characters from a wide variety of realms, as well as depictions of the Romani and Jewish peoples. Once players reach Kuttenberg, they will also notice that there is a Jewish quarter, including a synagogue.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 - 6 Things We'd Like To See In A Sequel
Fans are already hoping for a third installment in the Kingdom Come: Deliverance series. Here are some features we'd like to see in KCD3.
While this is perfectly authentic for the time period and location, with many large medieval cities having Jewish Quarters, Kuttenberg did not have one at this time. This is mentioned in the relevant codex entry, which notes that the synagogue in Kuttenberg wasn't built until 1881. The game also depicts a pogrom against the Jews of Kuttenberg, of which there were unfortunately many during the Middle Ages.
Town Guards In Small Villages
They Are There To Stop Henry From Committing Crimes Unchecked
While there would likely have been a town guard in the large city of Kuttenberg, especially with an army stationed there during turbulent times, the same cannot be said for small villages. The cost of having multiple heavily armored men guarding 24 hours a day would have cost a lot of money. Instead, night watchmen would be more likely, with individuals either voted to the position, or with men serving their time on different days. For small hamlets, such as Tachov, this is even less likely.
Of course, for gameplay reasons, and to take advantage of KCD2's exceptional crime and punishment system, a town guard is needed everywhere to keep Henry's crimes in check. Interestingly, though, some of the braver and armed villagers do confront Henry after the hue and cry is raised.
