Summary

  • Fans petition Square Enix for the canceled Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link.
  • Fans worry about missing important story developments bridging the various Kingdom Hearts games.
  • Nearly 1,500 signatures request the release of Missing-Link in some form.

A petition asking Square Enix to release the canceled Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link is blowing up on Change.org. Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link was in development as a mobile game spin-off of the Kingdom Hearts franchise. What made the project exciting for fans was that the game was going to have connections to Kingdom Hearts 4, including characters that would appear in both titles.

Unfortunately for Kingdom Hearts fans that were excited about the new mobile game, Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link was canceled by Square Enix. The cancellation came after Square Enix had already hosted testing phases for the game, with the company explaining that it didn't think it would be able to deliver a product that players "would find satisfactory over a long period of time." Square Enix apologized to fans, and while there are those who aren't going to lose any sleep at night over a Kingdom Hearts mobile game spin-off being canceled, some diehard fans are sad that the project has been scrapped.

Why the Wait for Kingdom Hearts 4 Feels Very Different from KH3

Kingdom Hearts 4's long wait isn't out of the ordinary for the franchise, but it does feel different than the wait for Kingdom Hearts 3.

These individuals have taken to a Change.org petition asking Square Enix to release Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link "in some form." The petition, started by user Illty Anon, has amassed nearly 1,500 signatures so far with new signees adding their name to the cause every few minutes or so. The petition points out how Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link was going to be a "crucial chapter in the saga" that bridged the stories of Union Cross and Dark Road to "set the stage" for Kingdom Hearts 4. "Now, all of that has been left hanging," the petition says. It goes on to describe Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link being canceled as a "painful" gap in the Kingdom Hearts timeline and asks Square Enix to release the game, or at least its story, in some form. Suggestions in the petition include simply releasing cutscenes, a cinematic film, or a reworked game. "The world and story of Missing-Link deserves to be seen."

This isn't the first time that a Kingdom Hearts franchise game has been canceled. Kingdom Hearts: Fragmented Keys was a mobile game in development a little over a decade ago that was canceled before it was announced. Notably, Kingdom Hearts: Fragmented Keys reportedly featured Star Wars, which would have turned plenty of heads, to say the least.

The world and story of Missing-Link deserves to be seen.

While it's always sad when a game is canceled, Kingdom Hearts fans worried about Missing-Link ruining the timeline can rest easy. It's highly unlikely that there will suddenly be big Kingdom Hearts plot holes because of Missing-Link's cancellation, and chances are good that Kingdom Hearts 4 would have always been perfectly fine to play without ever touching the mobile game. Square Enix released a fresh batch of Kingdom Hearts 4 screenshots as part of its apology to fans about Missing-Link's cancellation, and so hopefully that can tide everyone over while they wait for a new trailer or more substantial information about the next game in the series.
