Should You Kill Matthew the Collector in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2?

Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 - Should You Kill Matthew the Collector?

Henry and a ragtag group of bandits set out to gather as many men to fight for their side as possible, starting with the Dry Devils' own compatriots. Henry volunteers to track each man down during the quest, The Devil's Pack.

Matthew the Collector is one of the elusive men, and players are likely to run into him as they travel across Kuttenberg. Matthew has a new gang, and he bullies travelers into giving him money for "taxes." Luckily for Henry, he has a usual hangout on the road east of Suchdol.

Matthew the Collector may stop Henry while fast-traveling, and players will have the chance to confront him then.

Players who talk to Matthew the Collector will learn that he isn't interested in rejoining the old pack. While not entirely hostile at first, Matthew tries to enforce his taxation on Henry and demands 1000 Groschen. They can refuse him outright, or can convince him to let it slide with two coercion skill checks:

  • MEDIUM The Devil will have his revenge? (Speech)
  • HARD I'm not giving you anything! (Intimidation)

Matthew and his men will attack if they refuse or fail the skill checks. Players will run into the dilemma of having to kill or at least subdue him, although Matthew is fighting to kill. Additionally, about five others also have murderous intent. There are no consequences for killing Matthew the Collector. Players will still pass the objective, and when they return to the Dry Devil, he doesn't seem too surprised or upset about how things turned out.

Tips for Confronting Matthew the Collector in KCD2

Facing off against Matthew the Collector and his crew can be tough, so preparation is key. Here are some essential tips to help players survive the fight:

  • Bring Mutt Along: Make sure the loyal canine companion, Mutt, is with Henry. He can provide valuable backup by distracting and fighting enemies, giving Henry an edge in combat.
  • Repair Gear: Before the encounter, repair equipped weapons and armor. A well-maintained blade and sturdy protection can make all the difference when taking hits from multiple foes.
  • Stay Mobile: Keep Henry's horse nearby if the fight goes south. A quick getaway can be life-saving, especially when outnumbered or outmatched.
  • Use the Environment: If possible, lure enemies into tighter spaces to manage their numbers, or fight near cover to break line of sight and regroup.

Overall, it doesn't matter if players kill or leave Matthew the Collector as long as they talk to or confront him. They can loot him and grab the Rare Book from Sedletz if they kill him.
