The 2019 thriller Knives Out was a huge success with critics and fans, and the 2022 sequel Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery was just as fascinating. In both movies, Daniel Craig delivered a flawless performance as Detective Benoit Blanc, a mysterious and smart man who is trying to crack a gripping and confusing case. The all-star cast of Knives Out is just as captivating as the plot, featuring LaKeith Stanfield, Toni Collette, Michael Shannon, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Chris Evans.

Since the movie is an update on an old-fashioned murder mystery, it was important that the end of Knives Out was as sophisticated and smart as the rest of the story. Thankfully, the final moments make the whole viewing experience a satisfying one. There are many reasons why the Knives Out ending is brilliant and memorable.

What Is Knives Out About?

Jamie Lee Curtis in Knives Out

Benoit Blanc learns that mystery writer Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plumber) has died and that someone in his family might have murdered him. Fran (Edi Patterson), who has worked as the housekeeper for a long time, is the one who discovers his body. Harlan's family is rich and insufferable, including his daughter Linda Drysdale (Jamie Lee Curtis) and son Walt Thrombey (Michael Shannon). There are some great characters in both Knives Out movies. They are not always likable and usually aren't. But they stand out.

A major player includes Walt's son Jacob Thrombey (Jaeden Martell) who has right-wing political views. There is also Meg Thrombey (Katherine Langford), the daughter of Joni (Jamie Lee Curtis), who was married to Neil, Harlan's other son who passed away. While there are many serious themes in Knives Out and the film has questions about what makes a good person and how family money changes people, it's also an example of a mystery movie that has humor.

At the heart of the story is Marta Cabrera (Ana de Armas), who worked as Harlan's nurse. She is the one who saw Harlan before his death and seems to know what really happened to him. Marta gave him too much morphine by accident prior to the big family party at the beginning of Knives Out. Harlan tells her to save herself and makes it look like he took his own life so she doesn't get into trouble. Knives Out is one of the best Ana de Armas movies and she is captivating throughout.

Throughout Knives Out, everyone is a suspect, which is common of the murder mystery movie genre. It's clear that Harlan's family are pretty terrible and that they care more about his money than the fact that they have lost a father and grandfather. And that's definitely sad to watch.

How Does Knives Out End?

Daniel Craig and Ana De Armas in Knives Out

The ending of Knives Out is shocking: Richard (Don Johnson) and Joni's son Hugh Ransom Drysdale (Chris Evans) is the one who plotted to kill Harlan. But while audiences could tell that one of Harlan's family members wanted him dead so they could take his money, there is more to the story here. There are three types of mystery stories and Knives Out is a great example of strong writing, fantastic characters, and an ending that pulls it all together. It's impossible to get to the end of Knives Out and feel disappointed. The entire movie proves how fascinating and gripping a good murder mystery can be.

Blanc explains that he could tell that Marta was somehow involved with Harlan's death when he saw that her shoe had blood on it. It turns out that Harlan's grandson Ransom found out that Harlan altered his will and was going to give his money to Marta. Ransom was angry and chose to frame Marta. He ensured that she would give fatal medication to Harlan. But because Marta actually administered the correct medicine to Harlan, Harlan wasn't actually dying.

While some might have guessed Ramson's involvement, the movie makes it clear that Marta was actually aware of what was going on. And this makes the movie stand out among many thrillers that promise huge reveals and memorable moments. Because Marta is less innocent than she first appeared to be, the Knives Out ending one of the best plot twists in a movie. In the final scene of Knives Out, Marta stands on the balcony of Harlan's house and seems pleased to be getting Harlan's money. This ending makes Marta a mysterious horror movie villain. She was aware of what she was doing all along and tried to seem innocent.

The ending of Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is just as smart and surprising as what happens at the end of Glass Onion, proving that this franchise has legs. Knives Out 3 is coming next and it will be cool to see what the story is this time.
