While most Shonen Jump series that blew up in Japan were immediately also popular globally, that wasn't always the case. One major series that was born in Weekly Shonen Jump, but isn’t too popular overseas, is Kochikame. Kochikame is extremely popular in Japan, and a new anime for it has been announced for its 50th anniversary. This new anime could make this comedy manga popular all around the world.
Kochikame Is Getting A New Anime In 2026
- A New Anime Is Planned In Celebration of The 50th Anniversary of the Series
Kochikame is an iconic series. The series kick-started in Weekly Shonen Jump all the way back in 1976. Created by Mangaka Osamu Akimoto, it would go on to run for quite a while. Kochikame’s manga was extremely successful in Jump and was enjoyed by most Japanese manga readers. It finally came to an official end in 2016. Over all these years, it went on to amass 201 volumes.
Most fans of the series probably know already that Kochikame has an anime. That said, this anime series is quite old. Kochikame’s anime originally dropped in 1996 and it went on to run until 2004.
Now, in 2026, the series is set for a remake. Kochikame has officially been announced for a new anime adaptation. This anime adaptation will release sometime in 2026, but further details are yet to be revealed. Kochikame Is One of Japan’s Best Known Comedy Series
- A New Anime Could Popularize it Overseas
Kochikame is hugely popular in Japan, and is known to be one of the biggest shonen comedy series out there. However, it’s quite clear that the series doesn’t hold as much popularity overseas. Back when Kochikame received its anime adaptation, anime was far from its peak popularity overseas. Kochikame definitely went under many people’s radars.
That said, with a new anime adaptation in the works, this could finally change. Overseas interest in the franchise could rise soon, and that's great for the series as a whole. Of course, this also depends on the quality of the anime and how overseas fans will receive its humor, but overall, this is a very exciting update.
