Repelling The Devil King's Army

Seeking Glory For The Princess's Sake

KonoSuba S3 E5 Kazuma facing death

Kazuma heads out with the rest of his party in order to defend against the Devil King's army. However, Kazuma is almost refused due to his rather low level. However, he is saved by the others, who extol his various victories over the Devil King's Army. Due to this, Kazuma's head gets inflated, and while he initially considers the battle to be a piece of cake due to how many adventurers there are, he ultimately dies when he chases a kobold too far away and gets ambushed by a mob of them.

Once again, Kazuma finds himself in the afterlife with Eris, embarrassed at having died after talking so much. Surprisingly, Eris is more upset about him harrassing Chris, who she reveals to be her follower. Kazuma tries to make excuses, but ultimately ends up apologizing for it. Before he is revived by Aqua, Eris asks Kazuma to help her collect the Divine Treasures, the same thing Chris is doing. Eris explains that the Divine Treasures are powerful magical items granted to reincarnated people by Aqua, and they all have unique powers, including one that allows two people to switch bodies temporarily. Since the Divine Treasures could cause havoc if used by someone who is not reincarnated, Eris wants to recover them before any trouble occurs.

First Encounter With A Divine Treasure

KonoSuba S3 E5 Iris's Necklace

Kazuma eventually comes back to life, and finds out that not only has the battle ended, but Aqua, Darkness, and Megumin have managed to find glory among their fellow fighters. Megumin in particular is pleased with the attention she is getting until she suddenly gets asked to display her other magic, which she obviously cannot use. She desperately reaches out for Kazuma, who begrudgingly ends up carrying her back to the castle, where they meet with Princess Iris once again. Iris offers Kazuma and Megumin to get some rest in the same guest room he used before, which he accepts with gratitude.

While resting in the guest room, Megumin tells Kazuma that while she enjoys the luxury of the royal palace, she still prefers adventuring with everyone back in Axel, a sentiment Kazuma ultimately agrees with. Iris appears and tells Kazuma that he unfortunately won't be allowed to stay in the castle for much longer, but Kazuma doesn't mind, having already accepted it. Megumin notices Iris's necklace is actually a magic item with great power, and becomes entranced by it. Iris explains that the necklace was given to her brother Jatice, but no one can figure out exactly what the necklace does or how it works. She shows an engraving on the necklace to Kazuma, who reads it aloud as it happens to be in Japanese. Suddenly, the necklace begins to shine, and the trio panic as its power is activated.

A Short Jaunt In The Princess's Body

KonoSuba S3 E5 Kazuma as Iris

Once the light has disappeared, it becomes clear that Kazuma and the princess have switched bodies, made clear by their drastic changes in attitude and demeanor. They try a number of methods, including repeating the incantation again, but are unable to reverse the change. Just as he begins wondering whether Aqua could reverse the change, Kazuma remembers what Eris told him about a body-changing divine item and realizes this was the item she was talking about. He tells Iris and Megumin not to worry, as the body switch will eventually revert. With that knowledge, Iris asks if she can use this opportunity to go outside and explore without bodyguards, as it is the one thing she can't do as herself.

While Megumin and Iris go out to the town, Kazuma continues to masquerade as Iris, taking full advantage of her royal privilege. When Mitsurugi tries to greet her, he immediately chases him off, then asks Claire what Darkness is doing. When he learns that she's in the bath, he tells Claire to take her there, claiming that he wishes to wash her back as a show of gratitude. Claire is uncertain, but when he offers to wash her back too, she becomes surprisingly enthusiastic. Ultimately, Kazuma ends up in the bath with Darkness and Claire, but just as he starts to undress, he is sent back to his original body, which gets beat up by some goons Megumin provoked while on the street, providing instant karma for his sleazy actions.
