The two main joinable factions in Last Epoch provide players with different ways to get stronger. Both the Ciricle of Fortune and Merchant's Guild help players get more powerful items, but the way they do those things is very different from each other.
Joining a faction can potentially fast-track your character's gear progression in Last Epoch, but before that, you need to pick the faction that caters well to how you want to experience the game. Here's a brief guide on how each of these factions work and what you can expect from joining them.
Last Epoch: How to Get Wraithlord’s Harbour
If you prefer to play as Acolyte, then you should definitely find out how to get Wraithlord’s Harbor in Last Epoch.
Circle of Fortune or the Merchant's Guild in Last Epoch
To put things simply, the Circle of Fortune is for players who prefer to earn items through gameplay, while the Merchant's Guild is for those who enjoy trading with other players. You can join either of these factions once you reach Act 9 and complete one of Zarrick's quests.
If you have joined a faction with one character, all your subesequent characters will be able to join either faction at the beginning of the game in the Keeper's Camp.
Circle of Fortune
By joining the Circle of Fortune, players will get a significant boost to their loot gains while playing the game. The Circle's faction bonuses affect loot drops in various ways, from making enemies have a chance to drop twice as many items, to making entire Item Sets drop from what would otherwise have been just a single Set item drop.
This faction also offers Prophecies, which are mini-objectives that players can complete for bonus loot. For example, killing a boss or a number of elite enemies specified by a Prophecy can yield a guaranteed Unique weapon drop.
Circle of Fortune is recommended for beginners, as it greatly improves the looting experience while shining the spotlight on the game itself. You'll want to use a loot filter too, as the amount of items you'll be getting can get overwhelming.
Merchant's Guild
Essentially, the Merchant's Guild is Last Epoch's auction house. It lets players buy and sell items to and from other players, giving everyone a means to outright purchase the items they need for their builds.
The guild doesn't offer any actual faction bonuses. Instead, Merchant's Guild ranks act as licenses that give players permission to buy certain types or tiers of equipment. You won't be able to buy Legendary items as soon as you join the guild — for that, you need to max out your faction reputation first.
The Merchant's Guild is recommended for veteran players, as high-value items are usually very expensive. It's often better to start with the Circle of Fortune so you can amass merchandise, then join the Merchant's Guild later on so you can sell the equipment you farmed.
