The writer and director of The Last of Us video games as well as the co-creator of the HBO series by the same name, Neil Druckmann, is teasing that content from the lost levels in Part 2's upcoming remaster might make an appearance in the show's second season. As part of the game's announcement, it was revealed that The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered will have new gameplay content, including three playable lost levels complete with developer commentary.

The names of The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered lost levels were revealed not long after, but the content within each still remains a mystery. That said, the level's names, Sewers, Jackson Party, and Boat Hunt, have led to some educated guesses and speculation. It is also known that the levels will feature early-development looks at the game in order to give players a deeper understanding and appreciation for the creative process. Still, the various question marks surrounding the new content haven't stopped the show's co-creator from teasing how this gameplay feature might fit into the second season.

The Last of Us 2 Remaster Might Be Bad News For Other Naughty Dog Games

The Last of Us Part 2 getting a remaster that many fans believe was not needed yet could be pointing at a deeper issue with future Naughty Dog games.

In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Druckmann teased that "at least one element" from The Last of Us Part 2's lost levels is "planned for the show." Druckmann didn't go into detail concerning which elements he is referring to but did add the caveat that things are subject to change as the series' second season has yet to begin filming.

As a tease, I will say there is at least one element from a cut level that is planned [for] the show. I say that with the caveat that we haven’t started filming the show yet and all things are subject to change based on what we ultimately feel will be best for the show.

With The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered release date officially revealed to be January 19, 2024, fans of the franchise will have the chance to experience the lost levels long before the second season premieres. While there is no official premiere date for the second season, it isn't expected to drop until 2025.

The HBO series looks to adapt The Last of Us Part 2 after the first season successfully tackled the initial game. It's still unlikely that fans will know what element from the lost levels will be making its way to the show, even after the remaster launches, but don't be surprised to see some fan speculation come January 2024.

The lost levels aren't the only new gameplay feature present in the upcoming remaster. The Last of Us Part 2' s roguelike mode looks to check a long-awaited box with additional playable characters. The new mode, titled No Return, figures to be a major selling point for the remaster, along with the upgraded visuals and various quality-of-life improvements.
