In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Last of Us Part 2 director and Naughty Dog head Neil Druckmann has offered a subtle nod to plans for a sequel in the beloved series. The president of the games developer has certainly been busy lately. Between producing a new season of the Last of Us show and now heading his studio alone since his Naughty Dog co-president announced his departure from the company, Druckmann clearly has a lot on his plate.

Just last year, Druckmann and Naughty Dog brought the original Last of Us to the PS5. The updated game was a hit with fans and quickly earned a place among the best single-player PS5 games. Its release, along with the success of the HBO series, brought renewed interest to the franchise and has many gamers wondering when a new entry will be released. While there has been no official announcement yet, a Last of Us 3 seems inevitable.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Druckmann responded to a question about a sequel to The Last of Us Part 2 by hinting about a new game on the way. When the subject came up, he claimed that he "can't say anything," and added, jokingly, "my comms director over there will slaughter me." While not a confirmation, Druckmann's sly dodging of the query and the idea that he could get in trouble if he provided more information could be taken as evidence that a new game is, indeed, in the works.

It seems likely that, if there were currently no plans for another game, Druckmann would simply have said so. If saying anything could get him in trouble, it stands to reason that there's something to talk about. This also isn't the first time that Druckmann has hinted at The Last of Us 3, so this looks to be an ongoing pattern of the Naughty Dog president keeping interest high for an upcoming reveal. If this is the case, it appears to be working on lots of fans.

Some would argue that Uncharted is Naughty Dog's backbone and not The Last of Us, but the latter series is undoubtedly a major part of the developer's success. It's probably inevitable that gamers will get a sequel sooner or later, and it's just a matter of time. Hints from Druckmann only support the idea The Last of Us 3 is already planned, if not currently in development. There may not be anything definitive yet, but fans will want to keep an eye out for more news in the near future. Until then, players can still play through the first two games again and look forward to Season 2 of The Last of Us on HBO.

The Last of Us Part 2 is currently available for the PS4.
