Throughout the years, people have been leaking new information about video games online. Whether these leaks are for additional content to games that have already been released, or the names, release dates, and plots of games that aren't even out yet, they can be disappointing for fans who want to be surprised.
Games like The Last of Us Part II have had leaks that revealed a lot of information about the game in question and even sparked some fan backlash. Here's a list of some other games that have had their secrets revealed from leaks. Spoilers ahead for some of these games.
10 The Last Of Us Part II
The Last of Us Part II had a lot of gameplay and plot points leaked, and many fans weren't happy with these new developments. The leak showed a video where people could see how the game would look from the player's perspective, but also showed several cutscenes.
This could have been exciting if the leak also didn't include the major spoiler that Joel dies and players take on the role of Abby, the one who killed him. For those who saw the initial trailers for this game and thought that they would get to play as Joel and Ellie, this wasn't a happy surprise.
9 Pokémon Sword & Shield
Not long before Pokémon Sword and Shield were released, a leak surfaced that revealed the long Pokédex list, so fans were able to see the Pokémon that would be in these new installments. Not only did this bring up skepticism for some on how real the leak was, but it also fueled the outrage from some fans that some Pokémon from other installments would not be available.
For other fans, this list created a lot of excitement since it was a chance to see what new Pokémon they had to look forward to seeing in the wild. New favorite Pokémon were already being picked, and it allowed some to look past the smaller selection in the game.
8 Overwatch 2
In typical leak fashion, this information was revealed shortly before Blizzcon 2019, where an official statement was made about Overwatch 2. In the leaks leading up to Blizzard's event, several leakers revealed different details about the game, from what the logo would look like, what kinds of game modes there would be, and new aspects to heroes.
Some of the leaks that got the most attention were ones that revealed that Overwatch 2 would have a PvE story mode, which would add more lore that fans have been wanting to characters that they care about.
7 The Witcher 3 On Switch
While The Witcher 3 has been on PC, PS4, and Xbox One for quite a while, most fans didn't know if it would ever get a release on the Nintendo Switch, especially since the Switch came out nearly two years after The Witcher 3 was released. However, word started spreading that The Witcher 3 would port over to the Switch after several different online stores showed listings that featured a Switch version of the game.
Some fans were skeptical, but the game eventually did release on the Switch in October of 2019.
6 Watch Dogs Legion
When it comes to leaks, most of them seem to either come out shortly before a large conference or they are revealed by online store listings. Watch Dogs Legion was leaked through the latter, with an Amazon listing giving a brief description of the game's setting and new features.
Besides the hype around the name of the newest Watch Dogs game being revealed, fans were curious about how the game's mechanics would work since it seemed that players would be able to get help from NPCs in the game. This was later confirmed and shown in action by Ubisoft's trailer reveal for the game.
5 Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch Remastered
Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch has been loved by fans since it came out on the PlayStation 3 in the U.S. In 2013. It's no wonder that the leaked information that the game would be getting a remaster and a port for the Nintendo Switch made fans of the game excited. Not only would they be able to play the game they love on newer consoles, but it was also an opportunity for new fans to experience the game.
According to The Gamer, though the leaked details seemed that the remastered version would be released for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, the game's publisher, Bandai Namco, only announced a PC and PS4 version of the remaster.
4 Marvel's Avengers
This game hasn't released yet, and it's already being spoiled online, according to The Gamer. The announcement of Marvel's Avengers leaked from an E3 panel description about Crystal Dynamics's upcoming game. Before, not much was known about that the Marvel's Avengers game would be like in terms of mechanics.
After the E3 panel description was released, fans learned that they'd be able to customize characters, see their actions affecting the world in-game, and play on their own or with friends in multiplayer. It wasn't a super detailed leak, but it built up some hype all the same.
3 Paper Mario: The Origami King
Even though the game just released, the full game of Paper Mario: The Origami King was leaked online, so players were able to jump on it almost a week before its actual release date. Not only did that mean that fans had to avert their eyes away from social media if they didn't want to come across spoilers for the game, but some people even showed live gameplay on livestreams if they were able to get the leaked version.
Dataminers also dug into Paper Mario: The Origami King to reveal much of the game's contents, including things that happen at the end of the game. Hopefully, fans who don't want any spoilers haven't seen any before they get their copies of the game.
2 Far Cry 6
This is one of the most recent examples of an online store revealing details about a game before it's actually announced to the public. In this case, Far Cry 6 leaked on the Hong Kong PlayStation Store before Ubisoft had the chance to reveal any details about it.
Not only was the art and release date shown in the store listing, but a description of the game and its availability for next-generation consoles was also revealed. While the leak made the announcement from Ubisoft feel a little anticlimactic, they still built excitement back up with more details about the game along with a new trailer.
1 Fortnite
Fortnite can't seem to escape from leaks whenever something new is developed for it. Season to season, it seems like most fans will already know what to expect before any new content drops.
Fortnite is not only popular for players, but it's also a popular source of leaks for news about new maps, new and returning game features, and new skins almost all the time. This has even lead to some events being revealed before they happen based on any leaked skins that come out. No matter what's coming in the future, leaks are sure to show off what's new before players can experience it for themselves.
