The upcoming second season of HBO's The Last of Us television adaptation will reportedly feature content cut from the second entry of the video game franchise, which has been described as "brutal" in comparison to the first season. The Last of Us Season 2 is set to adapt the plot of the second game and will reportedly premiere with seven episodes, with the first debuting in April 2025.

The Last of Us is one of the PlayStation brand's biggest franchises. The story spans two mainline games and the first even received a full-on remake as a PS5 console exclusive, which expanded the original and saw major graphical upgrades. HBO's TV adaptation of the series proved similarly successful, with The Last of Us Season 1 garnering massive praise from fans and critics for its faithful adaptation of the game's story alongside a slew of original elements.

The Last of Us Producer Addresses Season 2 Timeline Order

The Last of Us Season 2's producers have addressed how the series deals with adapting the game's difficult timeline.

Now, with Season 2 on the way later this year, showrunner Neil Druckmann told Entertainment Weekly that the new episodes will feature some scenes that were cut from The Last of Us Part 2, which he describes as "pretty brutal." Druckmann did not go into too much detail about what these scenes entail, but they will reportedly include some of the content restored in the game's recent PlayStation 5 remaster, such as the expanded Jackson Party, The Hunt, and Seattle Sewers sections.

The Last Of Us Season 2 Will Feature "Brutal" Cut Content From the Second Game

While the first two scenes from the video game are fairly low-stakes and are mostly meant to develop its characters and progress the plot, the Seattle Sewers section from The Last Of Us Part 2 sees Ellie fighting off undead monsters in a darkly lit underground expanse. While Druckmann did not detail what new elements fans might see in these scenes, they seem to be leaning into the horror elements from The Last of Us and its many fungus-infected creatures.

Alongside these newly expanded scenes from the original game, Druckmann also confirmed that a character only mentioned in the game series is set to make their on-screen debut in the new season, similar to how Frank appeared in Season 1. Additionally, co-showrunner Craig Mazin confirmed that the story from The Last Of Us Part 2, which the show's second season is set to adapt, will reportedly be split across two seasons, with Season 3 capping off the game's story at a later date.

The Last Of Us Season 2 does not yet have an official premiere date, but it is currently set to debut its first episode in April 2025 exclusively on Max, where the first season is also available to stream for subscribers. In the meantime, fans can catch up on the video games, with The Last of Us Part 1 currently available on both PC and the PlayStation 5, and the sequel even getting a full remaster as a console exclusive.
