The Last of Us Part 2 spoilers
Recently, fans were treated to a stunning and dramatic The Last of Us season 2 trailer, which has only hyped up the excitement for the show's return in only a few short weeks. Seemingly ready to be traumatized all over again and have their hearts broken, fans of the HBO series have been paying close attention to the show's latest trailer and believe they might have spotted a huge detail that swaps out two of its characters.
The Last of Us stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as Joel and Ellie, characters from the post-apocalyptic video game series of the same name. Season one of the series did a fantastic job at covering The Last of Us game's story, while Season two aims to adapt the much darker and less hopeful story of The Last of Us Part 2, which introduces a five-year time jump to the series. Series creators Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin previously said that they would be including a game-changing detail when the HBO show returns, and even though season two will follow the main narrative when it comes to many of its plots and characters, its timeline will not follow the exact layout of The Last of Us Part 2,

Last of Us Fans Think Abby and Ellie Will Swap Characters for Iconic Scene in Season 2
For those who haven't played the sequel game and have entered The Last of Us' world through the HBO series, you might want to turn around now to avoid season 2 spoilers. In Naughty Dog's The Last of Us Part 2, Abby Anderson wakes up among a group of Seraphites after being captured and is dragged to a tree, where the group prepares to ritually kill her in their prophet's name. Abby is then hung by the neck with a bucket for support so she will not suffocate before she can be disemboweled. It is certainly one of the many traumatic scenes in the game that looks like it could be making its way to Season 2 if the latest trailer is anything to go by.
However, in The Last of Us season 2 trailer, which was released on March 9, fans have spotted a detail regarding this iconic scene that they believe could be Ellie getting hung from the tree instead of Abby. If true, this would be a major change for Season 2's Abby story regarding how it was depicted in the game. In a post on Reddit, user Nazuuu04 showcased the image that they pulled from the trailer that looks like the silhouette of Ellie in a dark forest, surrounded by the cult group and attached to a rope. Obviously, this scene could be taken out of context, and something entirely different is happening to Ellie, if it even is Ellie, but it has certainly piqued fans' curiosity if the show's showrunners have indeed swapped these characters out for some unknown reason to fans yet.
One Redditor replied in the comments, "Yeah, that absolutely looks like Ellie being captured. I imagine the arrow-to-the-shoulder bit in the game didn’t work as well in live action, so they’ve created a different yet similarly traumatic first encounter with the Seraphites for the show.", while another said, "Oh man! Looks like it. How’s she gonna get outta that one?" Other comments thought that this could be where Jesse comes to save Ellie, or indeed Dina, but in the game, Lev and Yara come to Abby's rescue, and that's how they form their unlikely relationship, so that would mean another big shift in storytelling for those characters too. Thankfully, fans don't have long to wait to see what other changes Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin have implemented for Season 2's adaptation of the game and if fans will actually be happy with them.
The Last of Us season 2 will be released via HBO on Sunday, April 13, 2025.
