Summary

  • Riot Games has reset the development of the League of Legends MMO, disappointing fans who were eagerly awaiting its release.
  • Co-founder Marc Merrill announced the reset, aiming to create a unique MMO experience rather than a generic one with a "Runeterra coat of paint."
  • The team will be "going dark" for several years, focusing on creating an exceptional game despite the delay, thanking fans for their patience.

Fans who have been patiently waiting for news about the development of the League of Legends MMO will be disheartened to learn that the game's development has been reset. Riot Games first teased the League of Legends MMO back in 2019, several months before announcing and releasing its popular first-person shooter, Valorant.

The short window between the Valorant announcement and release may have led some fans to believe that the wait for the League of Legends MMO wouldn't be more than a year or two, but Riot Games co-founder Marc Merrill delivered the unfortunate news of the development being reset more than four years after the company confirmed that it was in development. This move is reminiscent of Nintendo restarting the development of Metroid Prime 4, which was announced seven years ago in 2017 and restarted two years later.

League of Legends Fighting Game Reveals New Name and Release Plans

The developers of the upcoming League of Legends fighting game reveal the title's new name, a brief look at its gameplay, and potential release plans.

In a thread of posts on Twitter, Merrill explains that the decision to restart development on the League of Legends MMO was made because Riot Games does not want to make an MMO that feels like any other "with a Runeterra coat of paint." While he did not give any indication of when the game might be releasing, Merrill said that the team will be "going dark" for at least several years, meaning that fans should not expect any news for this time. The League of Legends MMO was originally confirmed in 2020, but precious little information has been forthcoming since then. Needless to say, this is not the news fans were hoping for.

The fact that the game is still being developed is likely little consolation for fans after speculation that the League of Legends MMO may never be released. He also reminds fans that "no news is good news," and that the team is sparing no effort to make the League of Legends MMO a unique and memorable experience. Finally, Merrill thanks fans for their patience, and reaffirms Riot Games' commitment to creating a game that fans will love.

League of Legends MMO Gets a New Executive Producer

This news might not come as a surprise after ex-Blizzard designer Greg Street, the outgoing executive producer who was also the source of speculation that the game may not be released, stepped down from his role at Riot Games in March 2023. Fabrice Condominas (previously at EA and BioWare) has been named as the new executive producer for the League of Legends MMO, who says he is "excited and humbled" to take on this new role. Condominas is perhaps best known for his work as producer for Mass Effect 3. The news of the development reset may be disappointing, but it is arguably better than a disappointing game release.
