LEGO's line of Star Wars sets are a staple of childhoods everywhere, with sets for fans of every corner of the franchise—even its most obscure aspects. However, one new release from LEGO puts the possibility of a major shift in its Star Wars games on the table.
LEGO's Star Wars games are among the most iconic titles in both franchises. From the original game to Skywalker Saga, the series injects the highs and lows of George Lucas' space opera with hijinks that fans of any age can get a kick out of. In addition, their gameplay, though simple, offers a great deal of adventure for young fans and hours of collectathon hunting for the intermediate. Their charm kickstarted a series of beloved games and unites fans old and new, remaining an inarguable touchstone of Star Wars media.
LEGO's New Cal Kestis Minifigure Should Inspire A Brick-Built Version Of The Jedi Series
On the plastic side of the brand, LEGO finally unveiled a Cal Kestis minifigure, featured as part of the bonus minifigures included in sets commemorating 25 years of LEGO Star Wars sets. Mainline Star Wars sets this year have all contained an additional minifigure unrelated to the set as a bonus for fans, with inclusions like Darth Malek and Fives already on shelves. Cal will be included in the upcoming Star Destroyer set for 2024, something that fans have been a while for—especially after a brick-built BD-1 model was released in 2022. Cal finally arriving in physical form opens the door wide open for a new videogame tie-in centered around the Star Wars Jedi games.
Future Star Wars Games Need A New Direction
If Skywalker Saga was the last LEGO Star Wars game, it would be a perfectly fitting conclusion. However, if there is a demand for continuation, the franchise will have to chart new waters. Dave Filoni's catalog of projects is on the table, but that universe arguably feels too disjointed to support a major title for now.
While a LEGO game can get away with injecting charm into any source material, the Star Wars Jedi series of games are a far safer bet. Adapting games into other games is something of a novel concept, but the trilogy structure the past two games have built is a perfect fit for the general format of LEGO Star Wars games. A LEGO adaptation would work fantastically for a best-hits take on the series, remolding the standout moments of the Jedi games into humorous setpieces. Moreover, it would likely allow for a multiplayer take on the game, something emphasized in LEGO's games.
The End Of TT's Hold Over LEGO Games Demands A Re-Do Of Star Wars
Skywalker Saga marked the end of an era not just for LEGO Star Wars, but for LEGO video games in general. Following allegations of crunch at Traveler's Tales, LEGO ended its exclusivity agreement with the company. This led to the multitude of experiments that began last year, with new projects like LEGO 2K Drive and LEGO Fortnite going in a bold new direction. Now that any company can have a go at coding plastic bricks into motion, it only makes sense for Respawn to pick up the tab. Not only has Respawn more than proven its capabilities in the past, it would be interesting to see how it would turn Fallen Order and Survivor into kid-friendly, whimsical experiences.
Furthermore, the Jedi games could cement a good direction for future LEGO titles. By making a new Star Wars game in the same vein as those that came before it (singleplayer adventures with some collectathon elements), LEGO could dodge the bullet of the live service market—something other WB games have been stumbling over.
