The following contains mild spoilers for both the Star Wars Jedi franchise and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
Canon this, canon that—Star Wars, maybe more than any other IP franchise of its gargantuan size, has always been concerned with what’s considered in-line with its established timeline, intimately wielding the Skywalker Saga as a baseline from which spin-offs and other series entries have then taken flight or stemmed from in a galaxy far, far away. That’s why, despite it still being a bit niche in the overall Star Wars fandom, the Disney+ show LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy can be seen as a breath of fresh air.
Namely, while LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy’s four-part miniseries is largely another outlet for LEGO and Star Wars to collaborate, it is also one of the few opportunities that the IP has had to truly stretch its legs and indulge in whatever playful continuity or lore rewrites it wants. Now, with its second season, LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy - Pieces of the Past, scheduled to air on September 19, 2025, two more beloved Star Wars legends are joining the mix. Unfortunately, its adaptations of Star Wars Jedi’s Cal Kestis and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic’s Darth Revan come at a time that’s bittersweet for both characters.
Star Wars Jedi is Thriving, But Not for Too Much Longer
It wouldn’t be overselling it to claim that Respawn’s Jedi series—thus far composed of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor—has done the most justice to the Star Wars brand than any related media, perhaps only dethroned by the popularity and excellence that the Disney+ show Andor displayed in its two seasons. Focusing almost entirely on its playable protagonist, Cal Kestis, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order’s story follows a Jedi Padawan refugee who flees from the Empire during the Jedi Purge and is enlisted by a crew of two to potentially aid in restoring the Jedi Order.
This first game ends with somewhat of a cliffhanger as Cal and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order’s Stinger Mantis crew, now complete with Nightsister Merrin and possibly an optional Bogling, choose not to pursue remaining Force-sensitive children so they’re hopefully not found by anyone, destroying the holocron that could lead Cal or anyone else to them.
In the sequel, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, a time jump of five years occurs and the Stinger Mantis has since disbanded, with Cal encountering its members once again during the story’s events. Now, with one more game supposedly in the works that may conclude Cal’s narrative, it’s a shame that such a novel story in the Star Wars pantheon is coming to a close, and that’s why Cal appearing in LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy - Pieces of the Past is a massive boon.
It’s been rumored for quite a while that Cameron Monaghan’s Cal Kestis would make the jump from video games to live-action at some point, but this odd detour to LEGO animation will suffice as it officially means the character is being considered for Star Wars media beyond the Jedi games. Ironically, because the Star Wars Jedi series may be ending with its next game, LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy - Pieces of the Past’s Cal is both a fun homage and a sad reminder that his chapter is nearly finished, at least as long as Star Wars is indecisive about what to do with the character in the meantime.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is Seemingly Hanging on By a Thread
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic’s Darth Revan may be somewhat of a deep cut nowadays for any fans who only began diving into Star Wars in the last decade. Indeed, with so little about Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic having any kind of presence in the present day of the franchise, it wouldn’t be surprising if recent Star Wars enthusiasts weren’t all that familiar with the character.
However, as for the best Star Wars video games, there may not yet be one to have surpassed it in terms of its immaculate storytelling and worldbuilding, with Darth Revan in particular being a fascinating custom character with player-made choices affecting how their role in the universe unfolds. It’s highly likely that there’ll never be another Star Wars game like it or Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords—that is, aside from Saber’s Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake.
This remake has been through the wringer with a lot of tumultuous events detailing its development history so far, though, and, if it does somehow launch eventually, there’s an incredibly small likelihood that its release date will be at any time in the near future.
The Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake will hopefully be in the oven as long as it needs to be, so that its finished product is terrific. Meanwhile, it’s baffling and exciting to see that Darth Revan will make an appearance in LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy - Pieces of the Past, even if it does bring every single Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake development problem to the surface of memory.
LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy - Pieces of the Past may not be the balm that gamers need to tide them over for the next however many years it takes for light to be shed once more on Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, yet it is a relief nonetheless that Darth Revan and BioWare’s Star Wars RPG have not been forgotten or abandoned in a broader sense while the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake has understandably gone dark and Saber is tasked with remaking one of the greatest Star Wars games to have ever existed. That’ll be no small feat to achieve, but LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy - Pieces of the Past could be a lovely amuse-bouche for it if Saber does happen to succeed in its ambitious goal.
