Summary

  • The Naked Gun reboot has a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is considered the best comedy of the year.
  • Liam Neeson believes the movie is needed for some giggles, given the current world situation.
  • Critics praise the film as a triumphant return to a beloved franchise.

Famously known for its spoof nature and ridiculously silly jokes, The Naked Gun reboot is off to a flying start on Rotten Tomatoes as it bites the bullet with a hefty score of 91% (so far). The reboot sequel to the classic 80s comedy has seemingly delighted critics, who are praising the film as "the best comedy of the year", and its star, Liam Neeson, believes there's a valid reason why a movie like this is needed in the world right now.

Directed by Akiva Schaffer, who also helmed films like Palm Springs, Brigsby Bear and Chip 'n' Dale: Rescue Rangers, The Naked Gun reboot is the fourth film in the franchise and aims to give a fresh coat of paint to the legendary movie that starred Leslie Nielsen as the comically bumbling Police Lt. Frank Drebin of Police Squad!. Jumping into Nielsen's shoes for the 2025 reboot, Liam Neeson is joined by Pamela Anderson, Paul Walter Hauser, Kevin Durand, and Danny Huston as the plot follows the son of Drebin, who must succeed in his father's footsteps to prevent the closure of Police Squad. Even though the spoof comedy was a success in the late 80s and early 90s, a comedy film of that era rarely works in today's day and age, but Neeson could have the answer to why it's such a success.

Liam Neeson Gives Hilariously Honest Response To Why Audiences Are Welcoming The Naked Gun Reboot

The Naked Gun 2025 1 Cropped

Talking to Variety at The Naked Gun's New York City premiere, Liam Neeson disclosed that the slapstick and silly comedy movie is needed right now in the world “because we’re all f***ed. And we need a few giggles.” Apparently, Neeson gave his very honest and real response in the deadpan style of his on-screen persona, Frank Drebin Jr, which makes it even funnier. Pamela Anderson, who plays the sister of a man who has died under mysterious circumstances, Beth Davenport in The Naked Gun reboot, nodded along and agreed with Liam's candid statement (or should that be Frank's?)

The producer of The Naked Gun reboot, Seth MacFarlane, joked while introducing the film at the SVA Theatre by saying, "It just feels like people are ready to have a big, good-natured laugh about the policing situation in Los Angeles. We really nailed the timing of this." However, it seems as though not everyone is a fan of rebooting the classic movie. Director David Zucker, who wrote and directed the 1980 film Airplane!, as well as created The Naked Gun franchise, saw the trailer for the reboot and wasn't too impressed with it, commenting that he wouldn't be watching it. "I never saw 'Airplane 2' because you can't unsee that stuff. I'm not planning on seeing the 'Naked Gun' remake either," said Zucker. "I regret having seen the trailer for it. It's like watching '2 Girls 1 Cup.' I can't unsee it."

Thankfully, a lot of critics have seen it and have loved what they watched, calling the reboot "a triumphant return to form" and " a worthy continuation of the comedy franchise in this story of police detective Frank Drebin Jr." TheBestWarGames's very own TV and Movie's lead recently reviewed The Naked Gun reboot, calling it "a worthy entry in the franchise, and is absolutely worth your time."

The Naked Gun hits theaters on August 1, 2025.
