Summary
- Deck Nine's Life is Strange: Double Exposure will honor both original endings of the game.
- Game director Jonathan Stauder confirmed the importance of respecting player choices and Max's journey.
- The game explores parallel timelines and consequences, possibly without Chloe or Arcadia Bay.
Deck Nine has confirmed that the upcoming Life is Strange: Double Exposure will "respect both endings" of the original game. Some gamers were unsure about how the studio would handle Max Caulfield's return in Life is Strange: Double Exposure, and it seems that players have their answer.
The dilemma for Deck Nine is clear. The original Life is Strange's ending gave players a choice, with Max having to sacrifice either her best friend, Chloe Price, or her hometown, Arcadia Bay. Players would make the choice between what players dubbed the "Bae" or "Bay" endings, leaving huge consequences for the world to tackle in later installments. Subsequent Life is Strange games have avoided naming a canon ending, but when it was announced that Max Caulfield is returning in Life is Strange: Double Exposure, it was clear that some kind of decision needed to be made.
In a recent reveal live stream for Life is Strange: Double Exposure, game director Jonathan Stauder confirmed how the game will handle the original's final important choice. "It was really important for us at Deck Nine that, if we were going to make another Max adventure, that the game would have to respect both of those endings and Double Exposure does that very thing." Stauder also confirmed that "Max’s thoughts, her journal, her SMS, her interactions with other characters" will be used to explore that difficult choice in Life is Strange, which players will make all over again in an early conversation in the game.
Life is Strange: Double Exposure Allows For Both Original Endings To Co-Exist
Whether Chloe Price or Arcadia Bay actually appear in Life is Strange: Double Exposure remains to be seen. In a game with decisions and sprawling consequences, it might prove too difficult a task to include either in any substantial way. It's a shame, considering Chloe is one of the best characters in Life is Strange, but it's understandable why this could be the case. However, the gameplay mechanic of Max entering parallel timelines means this possibility remains fully open until proven otherwise.
With Life is Strange: Double Exposure set to launch on October 29, 2024, there's still a while yet before Deck Nine's latest installment is released. When it comes to games centered around unconventional superpowers or abilities, there are very few franchises like Life is Strange, and it's awesome to see how fans remain so excited for the next iteration. Hopefully, Deck Nine speaks a little more about what players can expect before the game is released later this year.
