The development team behind Lil Gator Game has announced that a "game-sized DLC" titled In The Dark is on the way, continuing the whimsical and lighthearted adventures that players first experienced just over two years ago when the game was initially released. Developed by MegaWobble and produced by Playtonic Games, Lil Gator Game has amassed a very loyal fan base, and it looks like those fans will be rewarded soon with another big adventure.

For those who missed out on Lil Gator Game in a year filled with great indie games, the title is a 3D platformer that puts players in the role of an adorable alligator as they explore a chain of islands, helping out the friends they make along the way. Drawing inspiration from the Zelda franchise for its visuals and Yakuza for its absurdity, the game has seen a lot of praise from fans, with a nearly unprecedented 99 percent positivity rating among its all-time user reviews on Steam.

Lil Gator Game Interview: Director Connor Patrick Quinn Discusses Unique Characters and World Design

The Best War Games speaks with Connor Patrick Quinn about how MegaWobble designed the tone of Lil Gator Game through its characters and world mechanics.

Now, MegaWobble has revealed that a new setting is coming that will rival the size of the one in Lil Gator's island expedition, but this time, underground. In an update posted to the game's Steam page on January 15, 2024, the team revealed a new adventure that looks to bring back the childlike whimsy of Lil Gator Game's base content in an area filled with mysterious underground caves. The team has also included a new trailer showing Lil Gator navigating this new area in several different ways, including zipping along on mine cart tracks, gliding through the air past a subterranean waterfall, and climbing a massive stalagmite.

Lil Gator Game Is Getting a Huge Expansion

In addition to exploring new areas, Lil Gator is getting new weapons and toys to play with. As shown in the trailer, these include a mining pick, apparently for chipping away at stone, as well as a staff that Lil Gator can be seen twirling away like a baton.

Fans of the game already know that Lil Gator Game's diverse characters and their zany quests provide a lot of the game's charm, and the In The Dark expansion doesn't look like it will leave Lil Gator alone in the vast underground world. While not much can be derived about their personalities, the trailer shows off some new friends for the reptilian hero to meet, including a devilish pig, an aloof-looking lizard, a plaid-clad bear, and a flamboyant bat. There is no indication of when players will get to dive into the expansion other than the team's description of "when it's ready," but the developers promise more updates will be coming via social media as the release approaches.
