Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP will include two different gameplay modes, and producer Yoshimi Yasuda recently broke down what changes the Original mode will include ahead of the game’s release later this month. The original Lollipop Chainsaw launched in 2012 and put players in the role of Juliet Starling, a cheerleader/zombie hunter tasked with battling the undead in a zany adventure penned by future Marvel and DC filmmaker James Gunn and developed by Goichi “Suda51” Suda’s Grasshopper Manufacture. In 2022, publisher Dragami Games announced that a remaster of the original game was in the works, titled Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP and eventually slated for release on September 12.
Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP will feature the same offbeat storyline and zombie-killing action that made the original a cult classic, with a few new tweaks and altered gameplay features to draw in both classic fans and newcomers alike. One of the most talked-about of these features is Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP’s alternate RePOP mode, which adds comic book-inspired pop-up effects and reportedly tones down the old Lollipop Chainsaw’s grizzly violence. This has become a point of contention for purists worried about the game being overtly censored, though it was later announced that Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP will also include an unaltered Original mode that more closely resembles the 2012 release.
Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP Will Release Sooner Than Expected
The release of Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP moves up, meaning players will gain access to the remaster sooner than initially planned.
Dragami Games founder and Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP producer Yoshimi Yasuda recently addressed the topic of the game’s two modes on Twitter, clarifying that Original mode will retain the gore, cutscene direction, and art style of the 2012 version of Lollipop Chainsaw and stating that there were no requests from any of the platforms to revise anything. However, Original mode will feature adjustments to attack power, movement speed, camera movement range, combo input acceptance time, and initial combo skills to feel more in line with modern action games.
Yoshimi Yasuda Explains Lollipop Chainsaw REPOP’s Original Mode
Yasuda then went into more specific detail about what is being tweaked in Lollipop Chainsaw REPOP's Original mode. The number of shots in Juliet's Chainsaw Blaster has been adjusted, as well as the behavior of Nick's special moves. Quick-time events can now be set to trigger automatically, Ranking mode has been changed to a time attack that plays through all stages, the lineup and prices of items in the Chop2Shop.zom store have been adjusted, a chain attack system has been added, and image quality, resolution, and framerates have all been enhanced. Finally, voice work from actor Yukari Tamura will be available as one of the four different voice options for Juliet.
Some of the other changes Yoshimi Yasuda implemented ahead of Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP’s September launch include changing the cutscene at the end of the battle against Chet (aka “Zombie Big Chicken”) to better match the ones from other fights and making it so chainsaw marks appear on walls and other surfaces. Dragami Games is also planning to release a Day One patch for Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP, but Yasuda says that this is just to fix bugs and make small improvements to the new ranking mode.
