The dungeon master of a 32-year-long Dungeons and Dragons game has officially announced his plans to wrap up his game in 2028. This epic campaign began in 1993 during 2nd Edition Dungeons and Dragons and will finally reach its conclusion in its 35th contiguous year within about 30 more sessions.
Dungeons and Dragons is one of the most popular TTRPGs in history. That said, given that it is reliant on coordinating the schedules of up to a half dozen people or more, many D&D games are lucky to last a few months, let alone a year or two.
Decaldor’s 32-Year-Long Dungeons and Dragons Game Ends 2028
However, one dungeon master has led his friends through games for far longer than even that. Phong Nguyen, an author and professor of fiction writing at the University of Missouri known online as Decaldor, has been playing with the same group in the same campaign for 32 years as of 2025, having first begun in 1993. Recently, he announced his plans to conclude this epic campaign in 2028 for its 35-year anniversary. His group seems to meet around once a month, so this means there will be just about 30 more sessions until the epic battle against the final boss of their D&D game: Orthangul, the spawn of the king of devils and queen of demons responsible for defeating the party back in 2022.
The game started in 2nd Edition Dungeons and Dragons back in 1993, and has survived multiple edition changes up to and including 5th Edition, an apocalyptic TPK, and an isekai campaign within a campaign complete with a level reset.
Decaldor and his long-running D&D campaign are pretty well-known, with his account having over 50,000 followers and almost two million likes on TikTok. He regularly posts updates about the escapades of his game, including the amazing venues he and his friends rent out for the anniversary sessions. They played for three days straight in the Beckham Creed cave lodge for their 30th anniversary, four days straight in the Highlands Castle in New York this year, and are already making reservations to play in a treehouse in Broken Bow, Oklahoma, in 2026.
To put this achievement into perspective, Critical Role has completed three campaigns since it began in 2015, each of which lasted for over 100 sessions across several years. While impressive and inspirational in its own right, Decaldor’s campaign absolutely dwarfs it in comparison, with his singular game lasting more than three times as long as one of the most popular actual plays' entire existence, not to mention over half the TTRPG system’s lifespan.
Interestingly enough, Decaldor’s campaign isn’t even the longest D&D game in history. That title has been claimed by Robert A. Wardhaugh, a Canadian historian, author, and professor at the University of Western Ontario who began a game in 1982, and has been running an uninterrupted campaign in an alternative version of Earth, including Tolkien's Middle Earth 400 years after the destruction of the One Ring, with over 50 players, 500 characters, and no more than three weeks without a session over the years. This dynastic game currently holds the Guinness World Record for the longest homebrew campaign in existence.
That said, some Dungeons and Dragons fans claim they have been in even longer campaigns. Amid the hundreds of comments celebrating Decaldor’s achievement, TikTok user M Gilbert claimed they would be celebrating their 50th anniversary of their long-term campaign in 2028, which would mean they started a mere four years after the very first Dungeons and Dragons book was released.
Regardless, Decaldor’s group is a measure of dedication and storytelling that all Dungeons and Dragons players should aspire to. Gamers should be sure to keep an eye on his socials over the next few years to learn how this epic saga comes to its dramatic conclusion.
