Developed by Stormteller Games, formerly known as Thunderful Gothenburg, the first Lost in Random game made waves in 2021 with its distinctive blend of action elements, dice-based gameplay mechanics, and a Gothic-inspired aesthetic akin to a storybook nightmare that's equal parts eerie and charming. A follow-up game, subtitled The Eternal Die, was announced in summer 2024 and is scheduled for release next Tuesday, June 17.

Lost in Random: The Eternal Die Review

Lost in Random: The Eternal Die is an action roguelike follow-up to the original that balances its narrative pull with some phenomenal combat.

With just days remaining before release, Stormteller has shared its fourth and final The Eternal Die developer diary, which The Best War Games can exclusively reveal. The video features 3D character artist Tommy Karnerfors, who sculpted and textured all the game's characters, among other contributions. Although the Lost in Random sequel shifts genres, it preserves the dark yet cozy aesthetic of the original. "We chose to keep the art style because it’s simply adorable," Karnerfors says.

Lost in Random: The Eternal Die Embraces Weird Motifs

The world of Lost in Random includes many surreal elements that don't make much sense on the surface, the artist explains. Karnerfors views this as central to its appeal—particularly because it ties into a key reason many people play games: escapism. The sequel continues this design philosophy, fully embracing weirdness, silliness, and coziness alike.

Lost in Random Sequel Features 4 Worlds

Karnerfors confirmed that The Eternal Die will feature four worlds, each with a distinctive aesthetic. Recalling the development process, the artist revealed that the first setting Stormteller created was a castle with an eerie, ghostly vibe. The second world went through "many iterations" before the team settled on a dark swamp. For the third world, the studio chose "ice, snow, and metal" as its defining elements. Karnerfors said the goal was to create a setting that contrasted as sharply as possible with the previous two. The game's fourth and final world has a surreal, Salvador Dalí-like atmosphere. It blends floating platforms with unusual elements like tentacles and chess pieces to produce a highly unconventional design.

We chose to keep the art style because it's simply adorable.

Stormteller's next title will be simultaneously released for the PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch, and PC. Additionally, Lost in Random: The Eternal Die will be a day-one addition to Xbox Game Pass, available via the Ultimate and PC tiers of Microsoft's subscription service. FBC: Firebreak and Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time are also coming to the XGP catalog on June 17.
