The Best War Games can share an exclusive developer diary detailing the making of Lost in Random: The Eternal Die, which delves into its genre change and some other aspects of the project. The Lost in Random sequel is still waiting for a release date.

Launched in 2021 as part of the EA Originals program, the first Lost in Random game is a memorable action adventure combining some lightweight RPG elements with dice-rolling and deck-building mechanics. Players are given a magic dice that determines the cards they have available to play at any given time, which facilitates some truly chance-based gameplay worthy of the Lost in Random moniker. The sequel, subtitled The Eternal Die, was announced during Gamescom in August 2024. Unlike its predecessor, Lost in Random: The Eternal Die is going to be a roguelite.

Ahead of The Eternal Die's release, studio Stormteller Games shared a new developer diary detailing its recent work, which The Best War Games can exclusively reveal. The video features game director Martin Storm reflecting on various aspects of the upcoming title, including its genre change. "The roguelite idea for Lost in Random: The Eternal Die really fits within the world," Storm explains, pointing to the board game theme and how both dice-rolling and roguelites naturally involve randomness.

The Eternal Die Has the 'Essence' of Lost in Random

Despite the genre change, the developers aimed to preserve "the essence" of Lost in Random in The Eternal Die—something Martin believes they succeeded in doing. He credits Oskar Hanska, the game's narrative designer and writer, for coming up with a way to retain this identity during the transition from an action adventure to a roguelite. Playing the original isn't necessary for enjoying The Eternal Die, although the upcoming title will contain some references to its predecessor and might make newcomers curious about what came before, Martin says. Like the first Lost in Random game, The Eternal Die is made with the Unity engine.

Lost in Random: The Eternal Die is officially targeting a summer 2025 launch, but it's still without a specific release date. No pricing info has yet been attached to the project, either. Publisher Thunderful previously confirmed that the game is in the works for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

Lost in Random: The Eternal Die is also coming to Xbox Game Pass. Like any other day-one release, the roguelite will initially be limited to PC Game Pass and the Ultimate tier of Microsoft's subscription service, then later make its way to XGP Standard.
