After almost ten years in development, Lost Soul Aside is finally out, and fans of classic titles like Kingdom Hearts, Devil May Cry, and the hack-and-slash genre in general are already enjoying this fun new take on the formula. However, the game’s release has been surprisingly quiet, and there’s little to no information available, especially for those who want to dive into it without knowing much about it.

All in all, Lost Soul Aside is a pretty conventional character action game, but it has its fair share of unique mechanics, elements, and design choices that set it apart from other similar titles, and players who’re just getting into this adventure may need some guidance to get the most out of their experience. Furthermore, the following tips and tricks for Lost Soul Aside will be very useful for anyone who has just begun their playthrough.

Free Lord Arena to Unlock Better Abilities

The Gameplay Gets Significantly Better After That Point

Kaser fighting some imperial soldiers at the beginning of the game - Lost Soul Aside

Some players have already reported that they find Kaser somewhat awkward or clunky to control, and this is a perfectly reasonable criticism to have, because Lost Soul Aside is a fast-paced character action game where fluid movement is a key aspect of the experience. However, this is also only true for the first 20 minutes of the main campaign, which is arguably the least enjoyable part of the entire game.

The moment Kaser frees Lord Arena during the prologue and unlocks his abilities, the gameplay of Lost Soul Aside gets significantly better. He gains faster combos, a double jump, more options to play around with (like Arena Powers and secondary weapons), and even a snappier and more precise dodge. Any player who’s just getting started with this game should try to reach that point in the story as quickly as possible before they decide if they want to keep playing or not.

Take Advantage of Air Combos

Staying in the Air for a Few Seconds Can Be Really Helpful

Similar to the games that clearly inspired itDevil May Cry and Kingdom HeartsLost Soul Aside allows players to launch enemies into the air and attack them for a few seconds with dynamic air combos. Needless to say, this is a fundamental part of this game’s combat.

When wielding the sword, Kaser can transition from a ground combo to an air combo by pressing light attack + heavy attack. This is especially useful, not only because enemies are almost entirely helpless when they’re airborne, but also because most of their attacks exclusively target the ground, so this is a great way of isolating them and taking them down one by one.

Liana Always Restocks Healing Potions

Ignoring Her Is a Very Bad Idea

Talking to Liana - Lost Soul Aside

While Lost Soul Aside has an auto-save feature (like most modern video games), saving can also be done manually by talking to Liana, Seleria’s daughter and the game’s signature shopkeeper. Some players may occasionally choose to ignore her, especially if they don’t need to save or buy items from her, but this is actually a very bad idea.

It’s actually recommended for players to talk to Liana every time they see her, because she will automatically restock Kaser’s healing potions, free of charge. The only other way to accomplish this is by finding said potions inside random treasure chests scattered throughout the levels, which is obviously nowhere near as reliable. Additionally, she also rewards the player with another, stronger healing item from time to time.

Complete Mini Games to Get Gold and Items

Breaking Down The Linearity Is a Key Part of the Experience

Kaser and Arena find a chest - Lost Soul Aside

It’s important to clarify that the levels in Lost Soul Aside are almost exclusively linear, with a few open-world areas scattered throughout. However, exploration is still highly encouraged because Kaser and Arena can find a fair share of treasure chests, crafting materials, and, most importantly, mini-games if they go off the main path.

Most of these mini-games take advantage of the game’s platforming by making the player collect a specific number of blue orbs in a set time limit. Not only are these moments of levity surprisingly entertaining, but they also reward the player with gold they can later spend in Liana’s shop and/or healing items to use in combat.

Complete Tutorials to Get Rewards

They’re an Essential Part of the Experience, Even If They’re Technically Optional

Kaser completing a tutorial about special sword attacks - Lost Soul Aside

When Kaser frees Lord Arena and obtains his powers, the game will ask the player if they want to go through a tutorial session to learn exactly what he can do now. However, they shouldn’t be deceived by the fact that the tutorial is seemingly optional, because it’s imperative that they complete it if they want to get the most out of Kaser and Arena’s new abilities.

While, fortunately, tutorials can later be accessed at any point from the menu screen, players who ignore them the moment they pop up will feel extremely disoriented and/or overwhelmed by all the over-the-top and complex combat mechanics. On top of that, as the pop-up screens mention, players will be rewarded with crystal shards if they complete a tutorial, meaning that there’s a physical in-game reward for doing so.

Kaser’s Dodge Can Go Through Things

Those Few Seconds of Invincibility Are a Key Part of the Gameplay

Kaser dodging a laser - Lost Soul Aside

Dodge mechanics vary greatly depending on each character's action game, and Lost Soul Aside is no exception, so it’s important for beginners to learn exactly how Kaser’s dodging works. When he dodges an enemy attack (with L1 on a PS5 controller), he becomes completely intangible for a few seconds, meaning that he can actually go through them.

When timed correctly, dodging can make the difference between life and death, especially during boss fights. On top of that, Lost Soul Aside also has many levels in which Kaser has to avoid environmental hazards (like lasers, rocks, or traps), so it’s very important to remember that this useful dodge can be used effectively in those situations as well.

Look Out for Blue Circles During Combat

Perfect Blocking Is a Very Useful Mechanic

Kaser gets ready to perfect block in a tutorial - Lost Soul Aside

One of the gameplay elements that some players can easily miss if they choose not to do the tutorial is blocking. Of course, Kaser can obviously block (with the circle button on PS5) most of the enemies’ attacks, but he can also parry special attacks that are telegraphed with a big blue circle, and this useful mechanic is known as Perfect Block.

When an enemy or a boss performs an attack, and a blue circle appears on their bodies, that is the cue for the player to get ready to block. If they succeed in doing so, Kaser will parry said attack and stun the enemy for a few seconds, allowing him to deal some major damage. Needless to say, this is a key element of Lost Soul Aside’s combat, and mastering this simple-but-effective blocking mechanic is especially useful for the toughest boss fights.

Wait to Use Sync Finishers on Bosses When Their Shield Breaks

Deal As Much Damage As Possible Before Unleashing Kaser’s Most Powerful Technique

Kaser using Sync Finisher on a fake Lord Arena boss - Lost Soul Aside

Lost Soul Aside has a brilliant shield-breaking mechanic that applies both to regular enemies and bosses, as they all have an orange-colored shield bar under their regular, blue-colored life bar. If Kaser deals enough damage and depletes this bar, their shield will break, and they’ll be completely unable to move until it gets full again. During those few key seconds, Kaser can also use a special technique called Sync Finisher, in which he combines with Arena to deal as much damage as possible.

When fighting a challenging boss, most players’ first reaction would be to unleash a Sync Finisher the very moment their shield breaks, but there’s a problem: the animation of these special attacks is so long that the boss’ shield will be fully regenerated when it’s over. However, if the player attacks the boss with regular combos for a few seconds and waits until the very last minute to activate the Sync Finisher, they’ll be able to double their damage output and even defeat them way faster. Some of these bosses can feel like damage sponges at times, so it’s important to use this strategy effectively to take them down as quickly as possible.
