Lost Soul Aside might have plenty of flash and style, but for every positive on the surface, there are plenty of negatives beneath it. As a combat-focused experience, it succeeds, essentially giving players a boss rush-style game that basically has the battles going non-stop. Unfortunately, its worldbuilding, story, and characters are all missing the kind of substance that might have given the overall experience the extra push it needed to be a truly standout title. However, there is one character that manages to steal a bit of the spotlight every now and then, and it just so happens that she's also Lost Soul Aside's save system.
Most games similar to Lost Soul Aside take one of maybe two approaches to a save system: either they allow players to save the game at any time via the in-game menu, or they restrict game-saving to strategically placed save points throughout the world, with the majority of them appearing at the start of a new chapter, area, or before a boss fight. Lost Soul Aside, on the other hand, takes a unique approach to this by turning its save point into an almost ever present character named Liana, and somehow, she has more personality than the rest of the game's cast.
Lost Soul Aside's Most Lively Character Is Its Save Point
Liana Outshines the Rest of Lost Soul Aside's Cast
It doesn't take long when playing Lost Soul Aside to realize just how awkward and monotone it is, and that's mostly on account of its black-and-white characters who regularly sound like they're trying to be excited about a birthday present that they saw in the closet before mom and dad even gave it to them. The entirety of Lost Soul Aside's cast makes it hard to really be invested in its narrative and the relationships at the heart of it, but Liana manages to rise above them quite effortlessly.
Liana isn't perfect, by any means, but she is still far more enthusiastic and bubbly than any other character in Lost Soul Aside. Despite having a moment here and there where she sounds a bit drab, there's still emotion there that isn't present in the rest of the cast, and it's especially noticeable in the moments where she gets excited. There is, at the very least, more variation in her expressions than the rest of Lost Soul Aside's characters, and her body language has far more range as well. To be fair, it doesn't take much to rise above Lost Soul Aside's other characters in personality, but Liana nonetheless excels at it.
As a Save Mechanic, Lost Soul Aside's Liana Is Innovative
And it certainly helps that she isn't just another character. Instead, Liana is an innovative and immersive way for players to save their game in Lost Soul Aside, even if it wasn't really all that necessary to begin with. Sure, the traditional save point or just the option to save in the in-game menu would have been enough, but this is admittedly one way where Lost Soul Aside, in all its efforts to stand out, actually does. It effectively turns the concept of a hub into a walking, talking character that players can interact with, and it's even better that she has the bright and cheery personality that she does.
As a hub, Liana is also where players can craft items, participate in any Dispersed Dimension challenges they've found, change the appearance of their weapons, armor, and accessories, and more. It's ironic, then, that she, of all people, would have the most personality in the game, to the point that she sometimes feels like one of the only living characters in Lost Soul Aside. However, it is what it is. At least she offers players brief moments of joy between Lost Soul Aside's boss fights.
