Card games have multiple points of appeal to keep players interested. Some have a focus on trading to encourage players to interact with each other, while others are more about collecting and deckbuilding in general. Magic: The Gathering particularly features the latter two in how the game operates, encouraging players to mix and match countless cards from throughout the game's history to create intriguing combos and strategies. One of the fun parts of waiting out new sets is watching as new Magic: The Gathering cards are revealed and planning combos with them in advance.

The Universes Beyond sets might not sit well with a lot of MTG veterans, but it could easily be said that the crossover sets bring in tons of mechanically unique cards that make deckbuilding even more fun and exciting. The Sonic the Hedgehog Secret Lair may have stood on its own, but newer sets are adding cards to the game that help grow any potential decks featuring the colorful characters. One Spider-Man card in particular would work well in Sonic Commander decks.

Biorganic Carapace is the Perfect Draw Engine For Sonic the Hedgehog Decks

While Sonic has a unique effect that helps him generate treasure tokens at the same pace that he drops rings in his own video game series, "Gotta Go Fast" effect is one of the important aspects of Sonic in Magic: The Gathering that players will need to keep in mind if they want to build decks around him. Whenever Sonic attacks, any creature with flash or haste, like himself, will gain a +1/1 counter. With the Biorganic Carapace card from the Spider-Man sets, players can increase their creatures' power while also drawing cards for their efforts in gathering and strengthening them.

With Sonic's "Gotta Go Fast" strengthening the speedier creatures under his command, Biorganic Carapace activates every time the player in control of it attacks their opponents. All the counters Sonic creates work as modifications under the card's text, meaning enough speedy Magic: The Gathering creatures on their field could leave players with all sorts of options for further combos. It's a triple threat that helps encourage field presence, power and toughness growth, and drawing on top of that means finding cards that will help keep this combo on the field for as long as players want it to.

Cards That Will Work Well in a Sonic Biorganic Carapace Deck

  • Searching for cards is almost a must to get this combo going as fast as possible. Open the Armory and Fabricate would do great, and there are even Sonic-themed variations to use as well.
  • Creatures like Hotfoot Gnome that have haste already will be very useful. Hotfoot Gnome, in particular, helps some creatures gain haste until the end of the turn to get a quick counter off of Sonic.
  • Equipment cards like Chariot of Victory and Cloak of the Bat will add haste to creatures (along with other additional effects depending on the card), which allows them to benefit from both Sonic and Biorganic Carapace's effects.
  • Cards like Enter the Enigma will prevent blocking to keep the draw and counter combo going without interruptions.
  • Final Fantasy's Luka Stadium has an alternate loss condition for opponents upon dealing ten points of combat damage that could serve as a fun third piece to this combo.

The Sonic Secret Lair has plenty of cards that would fit well in this deck for those who want to keep it on the Sonic theme. Air Shoes, Piko Piko Hammer, Super State, Amy Rose, Power Sneakers, and Tornado, Sonic's Biplane could be useful here.

Players who manage to strike a great balance between creatures, counters, damage, and drawing will excel with this deck, but maintaining this balance is critical as Magic: The Gathering's Commander format has a 7-card hand limit. Even then, with the right card combinations, the damage dealt to other players through Gotta Go Fast's effects should keep players in the match for a considerable amount of time. Biorganic Carapace takes Sonic's unique ability and creates a nice, satisfying loop with it that will likely remain very helpful for some time after the Spider-Man sets release on September 26. Those interested in building a Sonic deck should make sure to grab Biorganic Carapace once it's available, as it's hard to argue with adding it to their decks when it'll likely be one of the least expensive cards out of the set as well.
