Magic: The Gathering's Final Fantasy set may have created a very high bar to clear for future Universes Beyond releases due to the hype surrounding it and how well it sold on launch, but the upcoming Spider-Man set has a lot of potential to achieve similarly impressive results. Considering the excitement about Marvel movies and the character of Spider-Man, specifically, and seeing how the set is adding iconic elements like The Soul Stone from the Avengers series, this is bound to be a big release for Magic: The Gathering. The set is launching in just a little over three weeks now, and it includes plenty of iconic characters or moments from the Spider-Man comics.

For example, Magic: The Gathering's Spider-Man gift bundle includes comics-inspired art on the box and accessories dedicated to the web-slinging hero, as well as booster packs to get started on the collection. Wizards of the Coast started previews for the Spider-Man set recently, revealing some exciting cards like Eddie Brock // Venom, Lethal Protector, and Electro, Assaulting Battery. The Best War Games was offered the opportunity to reveal exclusive new cards for MTG's Spider-Man set, and they are:

  • Friendly Neighborhood
  • The Death of Gwen Stacy
  • Villainous Wrath

Wizards of the Coast unveils the highly-anticipated new Magic: The Gathering x Marvel's Spider-Man collection, coming to stores globally in Fall 2025.

Magic: The Gathering x Spider-Man - The Death of Gwen Stacy

The Death of Gwen Stacy is a saga card in Magic: The Gathering, which perfectly fits this iconic moment from the comics, as it started with The Night Gwen Stacy Died (issue #121, June 1973) and continued in The Green Goblin's Last Stand (issue #122, July 1973). The death of Gwen Stacy was a big deal in the comics and a pivotal moment in Spider-Man's story in the years to follow, as it paved the way for the relationship between Mary Jane and Peter, given that they had both lost a dear person.

The death of Gwen Stacy was addressed as one of the most shocking moments in comic books, and it was defined as the catalyst for the beginning of the so-called "Bronze Age of Comic Books."

The Night Gwen Stacy Died

The new Magic: The Gathering Spider-Man card dedicated to this story has three main effects tied to its progressing saga status. When cast, with the spell costing 2 generic and 1 Black mana, it destroys a creature. On the following turn, the card gives each player the option to discard a card or lose 3 life. Finally, the card's third stage allows the owner to exile any number of graveyards.

Interestingly, the card further cements the fact that Gwen Stacy was alive before the fall, and what killed her was indeed the whiplash from being caught by Spider-Man's web, which adds to the character's tragic story of guilt and loss.

Magic: The Gathering x Spider-Man - Friendly Neighborhood

Friendly-Neighborhood-spider-man-mtg-magic

Friendly Neighborhood is another enchantment card, but this time, it's an aura. It costs 3 generic and 1 White mana, and it enchants a land. When it enters the battlefield, it creates three 1/1 Green and White creature tokens, and the enchanted land may be tapped alongside spending 1 generic mana in order to give one creature +1/+1 until the end of turn for each creature the owner has in play. This can be quite strong in aggressive decks, and it could see play alongside MTG's Sephiroth, Fabled SOLDIER in the Orzhov Sacrifice deck in Standard.

Notably, Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man tells Mary Jane that she knows him because he is the "friendly neighborhood Spider-Man" in the 2002 movie. This is a tradition other versions of Spider-Man uphold, both in movies and comics, but Maguire's version of the hero is officially labeled as the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man in merchandise.

Magic: The Gathering x Spider-Man - Villainous Wrath

Last but not least, Villainous Wrath shows a fight between Spider-Man and Doc Ock, with the latter holding an injured Spider-Man in his mechanical arms. Villainous Wrath is a sorcery costing 3 generic and 2 Black mana that makes an opponent lose life equal to the number of creatures they control, and then destroys all creatures. It can be an incredibly powerful spell that acts both as a board wipe and a way to punish aggro decks in MTG, and could thus see some play in various formats depending on how the meta evolves.
