The live-action Magic: The Gathering movie has received an exciting update during its development stage, as a recent addition to the creative team has a promising connection to Power Rangers. Magic: The Gathering has become a collectible tabletop and digital card game since its release in 1993 by Wizards of the Coast. Famed for being one of the most complex card games to learn, MTG borrows several themes from other traditional RPGs, including Dungeons & Dragons, and the high-fantasy IP is well overdue for a live-action break.

Most veterans of the tabletop game have a clear vision of what’s needed to make a successful Magic: The Gathering series or movie, including a strong feature on the game’s Planeswalkers and an ensemble cast representing the game’s color pie. A focus on the tabletop’s lore-heavy storytelling could also become the live-action’s strong suit, and the project wouldn’t be short on interesting races and cultures to explore. While a television series may be a better medium in fans’ eyes to showcase MTG’s vast world, the upcoming movie may just be the tip of the iceberg in a potential series of cinematic features.

Reported by Deadline, writers Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald have supposedly finalized a deal to pen the MTG movie for Hasbro Entertainment and Legendary Entertainment, according to Deadline’s sources. It was noted that both companies declined to comment on the hiring, and the status of director Matt Johnson’s position at the helm is currently unclear. A Magic: The Gathering movie and television show were reported to be in the works back in February 2025, following a partnership between Hasbro and Legendary, and the franchise’s transition to live-action may be the kind of epic project fantasy fans need in the future, considering the recent and sudden cancellation of Amazon’s The Wheel of Time series.

Another interesting tidbit to take from the report is Gardner and Fitzgerald previously worked with Hasbro as writers on a past Power Rangers project that never saw the light of day. Jonathan Entwistle was said to be directing the now-shelved movie, which was reportedly part of Netflix’s scrapped Power Rangers Cinematic Universe. Even though the original Power Rangers series boasted great stories at its heart, the 2017 movie by Dean Israelite left much to be desired by fans of the spandex era, and Netflix’s attempt to revive the Mighty Morphin’ team was certainly ambitious.

The tabletop game has released many crossover expansions throughout its longevity, including Magic: The Gathering’s 2023 collaboration with The Lord of the Rings. Named Tales of Middle-earth, the set became a popular part of the Universes Beyond series based on the masterpiece created by J.R.R. Tolkien. Containing 281 regular cards, the set also offered the highly sought-after The One Ring card, keeping in theme with Sauron’s conquest in the story. MTG has also crossed over with popular video game series Fallout and Assassin’s Creed, and the recent Final Fantasy set is currently making waves within the fandom.
