The Star Wars gaming community has been buzzing with rumored projects and anticipation for long-awaited sequels. One of the most exciting new rumors that's been making the rounds says that a game based on The Mandalorian is in development. The leak came from noted insider @Shpeshal_Ed on Twitter, and although it hasn't been officially confirmed, their leaks have proven to be reliable in the past. If the leak does prove to be true, it would fulfill the wishes of many Star Wars fans that have wanted a game based on The Mandalorian ever since the first season premiered.
This news of a potential Mandalorian game opens up a lot of possibilities for how it could look and play. A lot of fans have wanted a new Star Wars game based on bounty hunting for some time, and now that fans know Ubisoft is making an open-world Star Wars game, it's entirely possible that it will be the rumored Mandalorian title. After years of EA exclusivity, a lot of Star Wars fans were already looking forward to a game with a fresh perspective. Ubisoft as a whole has a lot of expertise on a wide variety of genres, so if it turns out that it is making a Mandalorian game, then it could be the perfect partnership.
Measuring the Possibility
The Ubisoft Star Wars game does not have a lot of official information around it, and The Mandalorian game isn't much more than a hopeful rumor, so anything connecting the two should only be considered speculation. That being said, there are a number of things that could link the two together, primary of which is the fact that The Mandalorian as a property, and the Ubisoft news is still so fresh.
As exciting as the Ubisoft news was, the game is likely in the very early stages of development. EA had a very tight hold on the Star Wars license thanks to its exclusivity deal, so it seems unlikely that Ubisoft would already have the game in a state where it's even playable. Considering how few details there were on the rumored Mandalorian game however, it could mean that it's just in the concept phase of development which would line up with how early in development the Ubisoft game possibly is.
This could be further supported by the fact that The Mandalorian as a property is still fairly new. While the show ended up being a smash hit, it's still in the process of fully asserting itself in the Star Wars canon. It has been significantly developed in its two seasons so far, but in order to give the story some meat, the game likely won't come out until at least another season of the show premieres. It was suggested in initial reports that the Ubisoft game would not come out until after the EA deal ends in 2023, and with season three expected in 2022, it would give the game a decent amount of time to use the third season as inspiration in order to shoot for a release once the deal expires.
Ubisoft's Skill Set
Out of the few details that are known about the Ubisoft Star Wars game is that it will be developed by Massive Entertainment, the team behind The Division and its sequel. Although the games may not have performed as well as some of Ubisoft's other franchises, the pairing of Massive and The Mandalorian could bode very well for the rumored game from a gameplay perspective. One of the best thing about The Division was its gunplay, and there are few characters in the Star Wars universe that care more about their weapons than Din Djarin.
It's not just The Division that has really solid gunplay either. Although Massive may not be involved with them, the Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon series both demonstrate that Ubisoft has a knack for pumping out some satisfying shooters. With how important weapons are to Din Djarin, a Mandalorian game would have to get his assortment of weapons just right to deliver a satisfying gameplay experience. With how much praise Ubisoft has received for the gameplay of Rainbow Six Siege in particular, it's likely that a partnership with The Mandalorian would truly allow fans to feel satisfied with using his signature weapons.
In addition to the potential for solid gameplay mechanics, a Ubisoft-developed Mandalorian game would have the benefit of Ubisoft's penchant for expansive open worlds. One of the most highly requested things in the Star Wars gaming community is a title that allows players to travel the galaxy to their heart's content. Ubisoft would make the perfect candidate for this kind of game, as the company has shown with titles like Assassin's Creed Odyssey that it knows how to make a massive open world. If it took a similar approach with a Mandalorian game, players would be able to explore the Star Wars galaxy like never before.
It should be stressed that nothing official is known about any of the plot details regarding Ubisoft's Star Wars title, and even less is known about The Mandalorian because as of right now it is just a rumor. There is a lot of potential in the leak about the rumored game, but until official announcements are made then everything is purely speculation. With how wildly popular The Mandalorian has turned out to be however, it would make a lot of sense for there to be some kind of video game adaptation in the works. Fans will just have to keep their eyes peeled for any other evidence that the game might exist, and if it turns out that it is indeed Ubisoft's highly anticipated project.
