Securing alternative sources of food for settlers in Manor Lords is paramount to making sure the Approval Rating never dips below acceptable levels. Feeding off the land quickly becomes untenable as settlement levels progress, the population increases, and the villagers demand more than one type of food.

One of the better food sources in the early game are Apple Orchards, allowing villagers to grow their own supply of apples that can be later sold in the Marketplace. Setting up an Apple Orchard is surprisingly simple. Here’s what you need to do.

How to Make an Apple Orchard in Manor Lords

Players can build an Apple Orchard on any burgage plot with a backyard extension for 50 Regional Wealth after unlocking the Orchardry Development node. To build a burgage plot with a backyard extension, extend the borders of the plot until you see a small house symbol with a hammer in addition to the larger house symbol.

The large house symbol is where the residential part of the burgage plot will be built, and the hammer is where the backyard extension will appear. By default, the backyard will remain empty until the player decides what should be built there. One of the possible backyard extensions players can build here is an Apple Orchard.

Like Vegetable Gardens, the size of the burgage plot extension directly influences the amount of yield produced and the number of trees planted.

How to Use Apple Orchards in Manor Lords

Apple Orchards take at least three years before they start full production, though some apples will be produced well before that. Apple trees take a while to grow and there is no fertilizer that can speed up the process. This means that building an Apple Orchard will not solve any immediate food problems. For faster results, consider planting Vegetable Gardens or changing the settlement policy to enforce fasting.

On the flip side, Apple Orchards don’t require nearly as much care as Vegetable Gardens since they’re fairly low maintenance. The family responsible for maintaining the orchard will only have to pay occasional attention to it, leaving them free to take up labor-intensive tasks. Just make sure they are not assigned to work at a Pack Station, as that will force them to spend a lot of time traveling between settlements, leaving the orchard completely unattended.

Once production is in full swing, consider building a Granary near the Apple Orchard to make sure that the house pantry is regularly being emptied to avoid storage bottlenecks. This measure is only needed for burgage plots with massive backyard extensions that are closer to a farm than a regular house.
