Summary
- Mario and Luigi: Brothership showcases new combat mechanics, including solo and combo attacks.

- Fans praised the game for being a step in the right direction with gameplay and animations.
Nintendo has released two new Mario and Luigi: Brothership videos that highlight some of the combat and Bros. Attacks that players can use. Mario and Luigi: Brothership is the first new entry in the beloved Mario and Luigi RPG spin-off series since its last release in 2018. Brothership was first revealed during the June 2024 Nintendo Direct, and was featured alongside a number of other first-party Switch exclusives that will be launching late into the Nintendo Switch's lifespan.
Mario and Luigi: Brothership's reveal trailer highlighted a number of things, such as the new setting of Concordia, some of the islands the brothers will be exploring, as well as the combat. Despite the series going on a six-year hiatus, Mario and Luigi: Brothership looks like it will be a proper evolution of the series' formula, picking up where AlphaDream left off. Nintendo has released some new footage of the upcoming Switch game, showing off some of the attacks players can pull off using Mario and Luigi together.
Mario and Luigi: Brothership Pre-Order Bonus Revealed
Gamers who preorder the highly anticipated new release in the Mario and Luigi series from a specific store will be given a sweet pre-order bonus item.
These videos highlighted how Mario and Luigi: Brothership's combat will be refined, starting with the pair's solo attacks. Brothership uses the Mario and Luigi series' classic action command system, where pressing the button in time with the action will award more chances to attack and damage the enemy. Like past entries, the player requires good timing in order to deal an "Excellent" hit, though instead of Mario jumping twice, Luigi helps his brother out, alternating between both the A and B buttons to get the best results. The same applies for the Hammer attack, where Mario will help Luigi boost his power by whacking their hammers together.
Mario and Luigi: Brothership Highlights New Combat Features
Nintendo also showed off one of the Bros. Attacks the player can do, which are special moves in the Mario and Luigi series that require both brothers to be active in battle. According to a rough translation, this Bros. Attack is called "Thunder Dynamo." Mario and Luigi both take turns pushing a device like a see-saw, the player pressing A and B at the right times, which generates enough electricity to form a giant storm cloud. Depending on how big it gets from the player's efforts, the move can wipe out a full field of enemies in one go.
One Bros. Attack that was previously shown was the Koopa Shell, where Mario and Luigi have to kick a shell around like a soccer ball, before either brother delivers one final kick towards their enemies. Fans praised Mario and Luigi: Brothership for seeming like a step in the right direction in terms of gameplay, as well as the cartoony animations used for Mario and Luigi's attacks.
