8 Lightning

Shrink All Opponents and Remove Their Items

An item that calls down lightning strikes on other drivers, destroying any items they are carrying as well as both slowing them down and shrinking them for a while.

Lightning is a classic item that has always been useful. With Lightning, players will ensure that everyone on the track loses their speed as it causes them all to stun and stop, only to start their engines back up, but without their items. Lightning is great for catching up to first place, or getting close enough to the top 5, since players are shrunken down to drive a lot slower, and without their items. The only real problem with Lightning is that players need to be so low in their placement during the race that it might not be worth it.

7 Spiny Shell

Destroy Whoever is In First Place

A shell that homes in on and slams into the lead driver. It will keep going even if it hits other racers on its way to crash into the driver in first place.

The Spiny Shell is the feared Blue Shell that will stop every player who dares to enter 1st place. The Spiny Shell only goes for the unlucky victim in first place, but that doesn't mean it won't crash into other racers along the way. An explosion that halts players in their tracks is enough to warrant being thankful for seeing 1st place attacked, but players are going to dread this weapon when they are the ones who are trying to win.

6 Mega Mushroom

Become a Giant to Speed Through Tracks and Crush Foes

A large mushroom that, once used, enlarges the driver and their vehicle, giving them a boost of speed and allowing them to flatten other racers.

The Mega Mushroom is a lot of fun to use, since it allows players to nearly triple in size, growing tall and powerful as they crush anyone in the vicinity. The Mega Mushroom allows players to crush their opponents, flattening them to delay their speed and drifting abilities, while also providing them with a hefty speed boost to make sure that they are one step ahead and racing into first place with ease.

5 Super Star

Become Invincible and Rapid

An item that makes the driver who uses it faster and invincible for a while and causes any drivers they run into to be sent spinning.

Become a Super Star with, well, the Super Star item. An item reserved for the bottom racers, the Super Star will push players back into the top spots since it will provide players with a great speed boost, allowing them to traverse off-road sections for epic shortcuts, while also giving them invincibility so that they can drive into opponents to spin them out, and ignore the impacts of all weapons that would dare push into them.

4 Golden Dash Mushroom

Spam the Item for a Temporary Infinite Mushroom

A shiny Mushroom that can be used multiple times for a brief period to give the driver several boosts of speed.

The Dash Mushroom is the undisputed king when it comes to unlocking new shortcuts that players might not have even been aware of, but they're nothing in comparison to the Golden Dash Mushroom. With this item, players can spam the Golden Dash Mushroom for a decent amount of time, spamming the button so that they are always speeding ahead and pushing past the competition without having to worry about using a precise Dash Mushroom to get the speed and air that they need for a shortcut or two.

3 Bullet Bill

Let a Fast and Unstoppable Bullet Bill Take the Wheel

An item that transforms the driver who uses it into a Bullet Bill for a short time. They'll then rocket along the course and send any other drivers they hit flying.

Bullet Bills are infamous for their use in the bagging community, which is where players sit back and try and get the best items before driving off to first place. However, since bagging has been nerfed in Mario Kart World, players aren't going to have the best luck in carrying a Bullet Bill to the top spots during a race. Bullet Bill is effectively a free chance to win, as it's faster than any Dash Mushroom, can provide players with invincibility to avoid Lightning, and even drives players for them to ensure that they have the smoothest and fastest ride possible.

2 Boo

Become Invisible, Invulnerable, and Steal a Random Item

An item that turns the driver transparent for a short time, allowing them to pass safely through dangerous items like Bananas and shells. It also steals items from rival drivers.

While the cackling Boo doesn't seem like much, players shouldn't underestimate this ghostly specter. Boo will allow players to receive a mighty amount of benefits when used, such as invisibility, invulnerability, and a speed boost. The fact that the Boo allows players to move faster and go off-road with no repercussions, and avoid dreaded Shells and Lightning strikes, means that the Boo is like the Super Star, except it's non-hostile and can steal enemy items to provide a reward after the invulnerability phase ends.

1 Triple Red Shells

Three Opportunities to Destroy Whoever is In Front

A set of three Red Shells that orbit the driver's vehicle. A vehicle-seeking shell that targets whoever is in front of the driver who threw it.

While not exactly an item that will provide players with an immense boost to their speed to enjoy a grand shortcut to help them into first place, the Triple Red Shells are a vile threat to anyone on the road, as they provide players with three opportunities to stop the racer in front of them. Triple Red Shells are great for players who are edging to 1st place, as they can throw a Red Shell to delay 1st place, then throw the second, and even the third, to ensure that they are stopped so much that players can take over and win.
