The Charge Jump in Mario Kart World is a completely new mechanic to the series, alongside rail grinding and wall riding, and all of these mechanics add a bit of depth to the Mario Kart formula. With a properly-timed Charge Jump, Mario Kart World players will be able to leap onto walls and wall ride, jump onto rails to grind, or jump out of the way of incoming hazards and items.
How to Free Roam in Mario Kart World
Despite being the big new thing in Mario Kart World, the option to explore the open world isn't easy to find.
For such an important mechanic, there is little in the game that tells players about how to Charge Jump in Mario Kart World aside from an entry in the main menu's handbook. This guide explains how to Charge Jump and details some reasons why you should learn to master the Mario Kart World Charge Jump mechanic.
What Does Charge Jump Do In Mario Kart World?
In Mario Kart World, Charge Jump will allow your character to spend a few seconds charging up, then release to leap up about a full kart's height into the air. This is high enough to outright avoid most obstacles and incoming enemy items, especially Shells and other items that travel along the ground.
Learning how to use the Charge Jump mechanic in Mario Kart World is essential if you want to grind rails or ride walls, because you can initiate these new special moves by Charge Jumping into rails and walls, respectively.
If you can keep watch on your rear regularly with Y, you can use Charge Jump to avoid incoming Shells, Star Powered players, and other items that enemy players send your way.

How To Charge Jump In Mario Kart World
To Charge Jump, Mario Kart World players must hold down the drift button (R) without making any directional inputs. To make this easier, take your thumb off the left stick entirely if you plan to perform a Charge Jump. As long as you are moving at a decent speed, your character will hunker down, and the kart will appear to shrink down, too.
After about a second of holding down the drift button without any directional inputs, you should see a small ring surround your character. If you let go of R after this point, your character will jump into the air. You can control your character while they are charge jumping (to a degree), but if you turn left or right while holding down the R button, your character will drift instead.
If you let go of this about three car lengths away from a rail you want to grind, your character should jump up and onto the rail and begin grinding. Leap onto a wall with a Charge Jump, and your character will immediately start wall riding.
