There are a few new mechanics in Mario Kart World that aren't fully explained to players unless they dive deep into the in-game manual. In addition to the new Charge Jump mechanic, which lets players jump up into the air, players can now grind rails and ride walls in Mario Kart World.
Mario Kart World FAQ (All Game Modes, Items, Racers & More)
This Mario Kart World FAQ has the answers to every burning question you have leading up to the game's release.
To ride walls, players need to essentially hit a wall at speed in the middle of a jump. To grind rails, Mario Kart World players must either jump onto the rail or naturally drive onto one end of it. This guide explains how to grind and how to jump onto walls in Mario Kart World, and offers some tips on why you might want to learn these new mechanics.
How To Grind Rails In Mario Kart World
There are two methods to Rail Ride in Mario Kart World: by jumping onto rails with a Charge Jump, or by driving directly onto a rail that is either embedded in the ground or connected to the ground at one end.
-
To use a Charge Jump to grind rails, Mario Kart World players must let go of the directional input and hold down the drift button (R). Your character's kart will appear to squat down as you build a charge meter. When you have built up enough charge, let go of R to leap up into the air.
- If you time this right, you can leap straight onto rails on the sides of courses or dodge incoming attacks like Red Shells.
- Other rails may appear in the ground, or a rail may start in the ground and connect to a higher pipe. Drive straight onto an embedded rail or onto the end of the rail touching the ground to automatically start grinding rails in Mario Kart World.
While grinding you can press the Trick button (R) to perform jumps and increase your speed while grinding. You do not need to balance your kart while grinding – you will continue to grind in Mario Kart World until you either jump off by performing a Trick with a side directional input or reach the end of the rail.
How to Free Roam in Mario Kart World
Despite being the big new thing in Mario Kart World, the option to explore the open world isn't easy to find.
How To Ride Walls In Mario Kart World
To ride walls, Mario Kart World players must do one of two things: Charge Jump onto a wall, or use a Feather item or boost ramp to launch themselves upward at a wall. As long as you either Charge Jump or are launched into the air at speed into a wall via another method, you should automatically begin to ride it.
You can only wallride in Mario Kart World for a few seconds, but you will build up boost as you ride the wall.
This mechanic can be a bit tricky, and it may take some tries to get the inputs and timing right. But you'll be glad you did, because in Mario Kart World, riding walls is a great way to build up your boost in races and is necessary to find some secrets in the open world.
