Now a staple mechanic of the Mario Kart series, Tricks were first introduced in Mario Kart Wii as something players could do after launching off a ramp or small height. In Mario Kart World, the method and input to do Tricks has not changed much, but the way Tricks contribute to your speed definitely has changed.
How to Free Roam in Mario Kart World
Despite being the big new thing in Mario Kart World, the option to explore the open world isn't easy to find.
To perform Tricks, Mario Kart World players must press the drift button while in mid-air. But there is a bit more to it than just that, as Mario Kart World marks the first time in the series' history that multiple Tricks can be performed in the same jump.
What Do Tricks Do In Mario Kart World?
In Mario Kart World, Tricks work much like they did in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, but with a bit of a twist. In Mario Kart 8, players could only perform a single Trick on each jump, while in Mario Kart World, Tricks can be performed over and over again while you are in the air. In Mario Kart World, performing Tricks gives you a medium boost upon landing.
You can perform Tricks in Mario Kart World off of any jump, and there is no penalty for spamming the Trick input to show off your flair in mid-air!
By default, you will always perform a Trick upon driving off the tip of just about anything ramp-shaped (unless you turn the setting off) or anything that gives you height. Launching off a boost ramp will let you perform Tricks as one might expect, but so will driving into a Toad in the open world, which launches your kart high into the air.
Upon touching back down on earth, you'll speed ahead of racers who don't know about this hidden Mario Kart World mechanic.

How To Do Tricks In Mario Kart World
To perform Tricks, Mario Kart World players must press R in mid-air. Do not hold down R, just press it and let go, and your character will perform a special animation as a ring appears around them for a brief moment. As soon as the animation is over, you can press R again to perform another Trick as long as you have not touched the ground.
If you hold down a directional input at the same time you press R to do a Trick, Mario Kart World players will perform a spin (left or right) or a flip (up or down). If you don't hold down any input, your character will perform a quick animation unique to them.
You cannot perform Tricks from a normal low jump or during a Charge Jump, only when you gain height from an obstacle in the environment. However, you can perform Tricks when using a Feather item, which catapults your kart high into the sky for a couple of seconds to avoid incoming attacks or reach secret areas.
