Nobody is sure what the team looks and feels like post-Avengers: Endgame, and this movie has to re-establish that, which is no small feat. Heading into Avengers: Doomsday, one of the biggest mysteries is who will compromise The Avengers. They might be who the movie is based on, and are typically seen as the most powerful group of superheroes in the universe, but right now, people are unclear about who belongs.

With Steve Rogers gone, Sam Wilson has stepped up to take his place, not only as Captain America but as the new leader. Captain America: Brave New World established that he was to form a new version of the group, having been given the task by Thaddeus Ross. However, according to a report by industry insider Alex of Cosmic Circus, Wilson will form his version of the group off-screen. That means by the time Avengers: Doomsday hits the big screen, he will have already formed the group used in the film. While that guarantees that Avengers: Doomsday can hit the ground running and get straight to the story's heart, it is also a missed opportunity.

When it came to the original Avengers, Nick Fury spent a long time putting the group together. Viewers got to experience that journey as he made one-off appearances in various movies to try and piece everything together. That instantly made The Avengers feel special, and audiences were more invested in the team because they had seen the effort that went into forming it. Marvel Studios doesn't have enough time before Avengers: Doomsday to do that with Wilson this time, but simply presuming it happened off-screen feels lazy and uninspired.

The Avengers Are Too Important To Have Them Be Assembled Hastily And Off-Screen

One of the reasons why The Avengers have worked so well up to this point is that the group isn't a random collection of characters. When they come together, there is genuine development of their personalities and the bonds that they have. Whether it's Black Widow being able to calm Hulk or the group all trying to lift Mjolnir, these moments have established a camaraderie between those involved. Even when they have argued and, at times, fought against each other, all of these moments have developed the team and allowed viewers to see them as more than just superheroes.

That's been important in making The Avengers feel special, not like a random group of heroes being thrown together. Seeing Wilson pick the team would have been another example of that. It would have highlighted his thought process, alongside how the people being asked to be members feel about it.

The Avengers should be the focal point of this movie because they are the lead characters. While there are lots of other impressive teams in Avengers: Doomsday, they all appear in other movies as a group. The New Avengers were in Thunderbolts*, The Fantastic Four have their film, and this version of the X-Men has been in plenty. However, this is the only time people see The Avengers as a unit; therefore, fans want to see all of it and get as many moments as possible to soak it up. Witnessing the formation of this brand-new version would have delivered that, yet it appears Marvel is pulling away from making it happen.

Throughout the majority of his time in the MCU, Wilson has worked as the Falcon and has been showcased almost as a protégé to Rogers rather than being on the same level as people like him and Iron Man. There are existing characters who feel superior, too, such as Thor, who might have a legitimate claim to leading The Avengers. Not developing Wilson as a leader will only fuel that belief. Fans want to see him take charge, and the fact that he was tasked with creating the team on-screen means that Marvel should follow through with forming it that way, too. The Avengers are supposed to be the ultimate group within the MCU, but skipping the new formation feels like they're not being given the same emphasis in Avengers: Doomsday.
