Many Marvel Rivals players are dreading going up against one hero, Jeff the Land Shark, in the six-on-six hero shooter. While Jeff may not be the biggest name in the Marvel Rivals roster of superpowered heroes and villains, his ultimate ability is causing no shortage of trouble for opponents, with many hoping that publisher and developer NetEase will enact a nerf.
Marvel Rivals' Jeff the Land Shark was revealed as a playable character back in July through a trailer first revealed at San Diego Comic-Con, more than four months before the game's release on December 6. One of the most lighthearted and comical additions to the game's cast, he's also one of the newest in Marvel lore, making his initial appearance in January 2019 in West Coast Avengers vol. 3 #7. However, despite his adorable appearance, the cuddly-looking land shark is striking fear into the hearts of those who see him on the opposing team.
Marvel Rivals' Latest Leaks Paint a Clear Picture of the Future
Marvel Rivals has a few notable snubs despite its relatively large and diverse roster, and new leaks may have given answers to one burning question.
Jeff plays a strategist role on the Marvel Rivals character roster. While he doesn't possess the damage-per-second potential of duelists or the tanky nature of vanguards, he is able to use his ultimate ability to gobble up everyone on the field of battle. That ability has caught the attention of fans of the game on Reddit, including user EndergirlQueen, who shared a video of a strategy in which Jeff inhales a bunch of opponents simultaneously, then throws himself over a waterfall while belching up almost an entire team's worth of opponents, eliminating them instantly.
Jeff the Land Shark's Ultimate Decimates Marvel Rivals Teams
Several players are complaining that Jeff's ultimate is grossly imbalanced, allowing for a single player to win a round against an entire team with a single move. Unlike Scarlet Witch's long cast time for her team-killing ultimate ability, Jeff can swallow up groups of players very quickly. At least one player has suggested that the ultimate move should have a longer start-up timer, allowing opponents to scatter before it can decimate their entire team. Still, some other players seem enamored with the ability's inclusion in the game, as it requires them to adjust strategies when facing off against Jeff, like keeping the team spread out and utilizing movement abilities to side-step Marvel Rivals' resident land shark and avoid being swallowed.
What's even more frustrating for some players is that, of the 33 characters on the roster at launch, Jeff the Land Shark is one of Marvel Rivals' easiest heroes for beginners to pick up and play. While he may be a little too fragile to handle most one-on-one confrontations with ease, Jeff's ultimate ability, along with his damage output, ranged weapon, and player-friendly healing methods, have made him a favorite among players of many skill levels.
