The development team behind Marvel Rivals has revealed just how well it will run on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro, and the results may be a little surprising. NetEase Games has had its hands full over the past several months while getting Marvel Rivals to run smoothly on last-gen hardware, and while it won't perform as well as it does on more modern consoles or high-end PCs, the developers seem dedicated to continuing to provide performance boosts across all platforms.
Marvel Rivals was released in early December 2024, providing fans of the comic franchise with a competitive, team-based hero shooter in which they can take control of some of their favorite Marvel heroes and villains. The original launch was limited to the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, with gamers who only own older consoles left out in the cold.

But a few days ago, NetEase confirmed that Marvel Rivals will be coming to PlayStation 4 on September 12, which doesn't give PS4 owners a lot of time to prepare for its launch. Following that announcement, a new post on the game's official website details the specifications for how well the game is expected to run on both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro, although an asterisk denotes that not all the performance data has been officially verified. The basic PS4, which was released nearly 12 years ago, will be able to run the game, though some players may be disappointed to learn that it is only expected to be displayed at 30 frames per second, with a 1080p resolution.
By comparison, when running on the PS4 Pro, performance increases considerably, as the development team has reportedly been able to get Marvel Rivals to run at 60 fps with a 1440p resolution. That's not entirely surprising, considering the PS4 Pro is almost twice as powerful as the standard PS4 and is three years newer, but those spec states look identical to the standard performance mode numbers the game launched with on PlayStation 5. The PS5 also supports a High Framerate mode that bumps the game up to 1,200 fps at the cost of some resolution, but fans may still be impressed with how the PS4 Pro handles the game. Both last-gen consoles will require 40 GB of free storage space to install Marvel Rivals.
The release of the PS4 port comes at a good time, as it coincides with the start of the game's fourth season. The official Marvel Rivals Season 4 roadmap shows that September 12 will bring new hero Angela to the game along with a new event, battle pass, and more arcade modes, while plans through October include the release of the K'un-Lun - Heart of Heaven map and more costumes and accessories. The post announcing the PS4 specs states that the team has even more surprises prepared for Season 4.
