Summary

  • NetEase Games, developers of Marvel Rivals, have no plans for a PVE mode despite player demand.
  • Marvel Rivals has become a successful multiplayer game with millions of players enjoying PVP battles.
  • The possibility of a "lighter mode" with a sense of PVE in Marvel Rivals is being considered by the development team.

NetEase Games, developers of hit hero shooter Marvel Rivals, do not have definite plans to add a PVE mode to the game. Marvel Rivals launched in late 2024, and to date has exclusively featured competitive PVP play.

Despite being less than three months old, Marvel Rivals has already proven itself as a solid multiplayer hit. Millions of players have given the game a try, often picking favorites from the large Marvel Rivals playable roster. Even players who haven't played the game appreciate seeing the Marvel Rivals versions of popular characters, speculating about who could join the roster next or how the game will justify the spectacle of heroes and villains teaming up against each other.

One particular topic of fan discussion is player-versus-environment play (PVE). Marvel Rivals PVE is a particularly persistent recurring request among many fans. But in an interview with IGN, Marvel Rivals Producer Weicong Wu dampened some hopes of a PVE mode in the near future. While acknowledging audience desire, Wu said that a "hardcore" PVE experience would be "totally different" from Marvel Rivals as it exists now.

Marvel Rivals Developer Has No Solid Plans for PVE Yet

One telling part of Wu's response is the reference to "hardcore PVE" in Marvel Rivals. Indeed, like Marvel Rivals, most hero shooters don't have dedicated single-player or cooperative campaign modes. Even Blizzard, a pioneer of the hero shooter genre, effectively canceled its plans to put a PVE campaign in Overwatch 2. Making a distinct and enjoyable PVE experience requires a different approach to design compared to that for a competitive team-based game like Marvel Rivals, which might be beyond NetEase Games' current capacity.

However, not all hope is lost for the prospect of fans eventually seeing some form of PVE in Marvel Rivals. In the same comment, Wu did say that the development team is "continually experimenting" with new gameplay approaches that can work with Marvel Rivals. He referred to the possibility of a "lighter mode" that conveys a "lighter sense" PVE, but stopped short of describing what that mode might be.

It looks like that despite Marvel Rivals doing things few hero shooters manage, PVE isn't going to be on that list just yet. But given the talk of experimentation, it seems that NetEase Games is well aware of the demand, hinting that fans of co-op or more narrative-focused content shouldn't give up hope for the future.
