Benjamin Grim, more commonly known as the Thing, was added to Marvel Rivals along with the rest of his team, the Fantastic Four. Both the Human Torch and Mister Fantastic are duelists characters, while the Invisible Woman is a Strategist.

The Thing, on the other hand, is a Vanguard with a very heavy focus on melee gameplay. In fact, he has no form of projectiles at all. One would think this would make him rather tricky for beginners. However, he possesses a single-star rating in terms of difficulty. This makes him one of the easiest characters in the game. This also makes him the easiest to play among the rest of the Fantastic Four.

For readers new to The Fantastic Four, here are a few excellent stories to introduce you to Marvel's first family.

How to Play the Thing in Marvel Rivals

The Thing has an incredibly simple kit that players will be able to get the hang of in a matter of minutes. Despite being so quick to learn, it will still take a few games for players to get the experience they need to master this hero.

It is always best to take a new character into the practice range first.

Ability Name

Ability Type

Description

Rocky Jab

Primary Attack

The Thing throws two punches in quick succession at melee range.

Yancy Street Charge

Active Ability

The Thing charges forward, knocking enemies into the air. At the end of the ability, the Thing will create an area of effect that will prevent mobility abilities. This ability will also give the Thing a decent amount of shield so they can rush enemies.

Embattled Leap

Active Ability

The Thing will leap towards an ally, giving both of them damage reduction.

Stone Haymaker

Active Ability

A high damage attack with a small charge time and no cooldown — with a small amount of shield to boot.

Unyielding Will

Passive Ability

The Thing is immune to displacement effects such as launch-up and knock-back.

Cosmic Fastball

Team-Up Ability

This is a Team-Up ability that can be used while one of your allies is playing Wolverine. Once both players have agreed to initiate this ability. Wolverine will leap into the Thing’s hand. The Thing can then carry him around until he is thrown. This can be a great way to get Wolverine into a more favorable spot during matches. This ability can also be used by someone playing the Hulk.

Cooperative Comrades

Team-Up Ability

All members of the Fantastic Four have access to this Team-Up ability when one of their allies is playing the Invisible Woman. This Team-Up ability will cause shields to appear on their bodies. While these shields are present, they will generate Bonus Health for their users. This can help make up for lost health and can even turn the tide of fights.

Clobberin’ Time

Ultimate Ability

The Thing slams his hands down and creates a shockwave that travels a short distance. This can launch enemies into the air.

Tips and Tricks for Playing the Thing in Marvel Rivals

Players will want to make use of Yancy Street Charge to close the distance and have some shield while doing so. However, it is a better idea to use Embattled Leap on an ally if they are already engaging the enemy. Using this will close the distance and give both of you some damage reduction. This also allows you to support your ally by soaking up some melee aggro.

Missing with Stone Haymaker means you’re open to a counterattack, so focus on using your primary attack against dodgy enemies and bust out the haymaker when you’re sure it won’t miss. The best time to make use of Cooperative Comrades is when there are multiple enemies around, as using it prematurely means you risk more enemies coming once it has already ended.
