The mysterious black-and-white variants in Marvel Snap baffle most beginners. They don’t appear anywhere in the Shop or Collection Level upgrades, leaving fans wondering how they are obtained. While the black-and-white appearances for cards are cosmetic, they are still highly sought after. This guide aims to clarify everything about ink-background cards and explain how to get them. Moreover, it provides players with cost estimation, breaking down the in-game and real-life value of black-and-white finishes.
Marvel Snap’s Ink Cards Explained
Ink is a card Finish in Marvel Snap. It changes the background of a card to a black-and-white retro comic style. Ink differs from card variants in that it is only achieved through Splitting Infinity Level characters.
In terms of rarity, Ink or black-and-white Finishes are the second-hardest to get. They appear only in 10% of Splits, provided the player has already maxed out a character four times.
In total, there are four Finishes in Marvel Snap: Prism, Foil, Ink, and Gold.
How to Unlock B&W Card Backgrounds
To get a black-and-white card in Marvel Snap, players need to Split a card at least four times, which can be done on variants of the same character. However, note that the probability of obtaining inked cards after the fourth Infinity Split remains at 10%. The following table shows the likeliness of getting each Finish:

Inked backgrounds are one of the rarest Finishes. The reason is they cost thousands of Credits and hundreds of Boosters. Plus, there is always some RNG involved. Some players may Split a card six times or more and still get no B&W version.
However, since the game promises no matching Splits, more Infinity upgrades equals a higher chance of unlocking black-and-white cards. For example, the player who owns the Prism and Foil Finishes of a card is likelier to get the B&W version.
The Cost of Getting Black and White Cards
If the player obtains a black & white card on their fourth Infinity Split, they will have spent 6100 Credits and 620 Boosters. This is because each Split costs 1525 Credits and 155 Boosters of a specific card.
Considering that 3000-Credit bundles of Marvel Snap sell for about $25, upgrading a card to Infinity and getting B&W Splits with real-life money would cost about $50.
