Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige Confirms Changes Are Coming

The Marvel Multiverse Is Going To Be Brought To An End

The Multiverse is an idea that had a lot of potential, opening up different timelines for storylines to happen that audiences might not have expected. Marvel Studios has exploited that to its full potential with wild cameos as actors have reprised old roles, or played someone else entirely in the case of Robert Downey Jr’s upcoming role as Doctor Doom. However, there has been a dip in interest levels for the MCU during this time, and that isn’t a coincidence. The Multiverse has been confusing to follow due to the sheer amount of content, and it hasn’t been the easiest thing to keep up with from project to project, requiring a significant commitment from fans. Marvel Studios might have put too much expectation on the audience to view everything, and that’s something that is leading to big changes. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has confirmed that Avengers: Secret Wars will start a new era for the MCU during a press event (via Variety).

"We're utilizing that [story] not just to round out the stories we've been telling post-Endgame, just as importantly – and you can look at the Secret War comics for where that takes you – it very, very much sets us up for the future," Feige revealed. "Endgame, literally, was about endings. Secret Wars is about beginnings."

The Multiverse is being brought to an end with Avengers: Secret Wars, a development that many fans have been hoping to see. Fans are eager to experience a single, unified timeline once again, and it appears that Feige is aware of this. The fact that they’re listening to the audience and adapting is a positive development, as they’re making changes that will hopefully improve the MCU and enhance fan enjoyment in the long term.

Marvel Studios Is Essentially Rebooting Its Own Franchise

The MCU Is Going To Use One Timeline Moving Forward

Avengers: Secret Wars is going to be a pivotal movie for the franchise moving forward, as Marvel Studios is hitting the reset button on its timeline. However, Feige was quick to play down the idea that Marvel is rebooting things, as he said, “Reboot is a scary word. Reboot can a lot of things to a lot of people. Reset, singular timeline. We’re thinking along those lines.” However, it doesn’t matter how the Marvel Studios President wants to dress it up; this is essentially going to work as a reboot, with the entire franchise being refreshed in some way to get everything back on one timeline. Clearly, there will be a singular moment that makes this happen, which will be explained in Avengers: Secret Wars, and audiences can then enjoy the restart from that point forward. The first X-Men movie has been confirmed as the film where the refresh will occur, and that’s something that should benefit the MCU moving forward, hopefully making it accessible to everyone once again, regardless of how much content they want to watch from this franchise.

Marvel’s Multiverse Was An Ambitious Project That Hasn’t Worked

The Storyline Has Required Homework From Audiences

The MCU has always been an ambitious idea from its inception, as the thought of connecting so many different movies and characters had never been done before. Marvel Studios took a big risk, and it paid off as they reaped the rewards from the financial successes of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. However, the Multiverse took things to a whole new level, as not only was Marvel Studios combining different movies and television shows, but also multiple timelines. Having characters appear in various aspects of the storyline, some of which haven’t been involved in the story for years, has proven to be a confusing situation, and perhaps a step too far for the majority of people to comprehend.

While some of the Multiverse projects have been genuinely enjoyable, the problem is that it feels like homework has to be completed before watching anything from the franchise. This is why the Multiverse has ultimately failed, as audiences shouldn’t need to revisit countless movies and television shows to understand what’s happening. Not every person wants to view each Marvel show or movie, but that has taken away from their enjoyment at times. The idea of the MCU should be that fans are rewarded for watching everything with subtle nods to other projects, but it should never feel compulsory. That has been where the Multiverse has fallen short of the mark, and the fact that they’re resetting it all after Avengers: Secret Wars feels like Marvel Studios is holding up its hands and admitting defeat.
