Marvel Studios Is Overstuffing Spider-Man: Brand New Day

There Are Going To Be Multiple Heroes And Villains

Captain America Civil War Spider-Man

The focus of Spider-Man: Brand New Day might be on Peter Parker himself, but Marvel Studios is set to fill this movie with a lot of characters, to the point where it might become problematic. It has already been confirmed that The Hulk and The Punisher will be involved in this film, which adds two huge characters with a lot of personality and power, who will demand plenty of attention to make their inclusion worthwhile. Meanwhile, Sadie Sink will also join the cast in an unspecified role, likely playing another important figure in this one. However, it isn’t just these characters who are filling up the movie, as Spider-Man: Brand New Day is also going to feature a plethora of villains. There have been up to six characters rumored to be involved in this film, with Tarantula, Scorpion, Boomerang, Tombstone, Ramrod, and Mister Negative all expected to be involved in some capacity.

While it sounds exciting due to the number of characters involved, it isn’t always simple to blend that many people into one movie, especially with so many brand-new characters who will require explanation. This creates a problem for Marvel, as they will need to give each character enough time to make them feel relevant, which won’t be an easy feat when trying to create a polished movie with a story that moves along seamlessly.

The MCU Is Going Through A Lot Of Team Movies

Characters Aren’t Getting The Opportunity To Shine As Individuals

The Thunderbolts confront The Void - Thunderbolts

In recent years, Marvel Studios has heavily relied on featuring multiple characters in its movies, rather than relying solely on one individual hero in the lead role. That has started to become an issue, as reflected in the lower box office returns, where audiences are seemingly not being drawn to see one character thrive as they previously were for the likes of Iron Man and Thor. It’s an issue that Marvel Studios appears to be overlooking once again with this movie, opting to fill Spider-Man: Brand New Day with as many characters as possible in the hope that it will get people excited. However, with two Avengers movies to follow, it feels like the team element of the MCU is being pushed too far. It is happening at the expense of the individual characters, as audiences aren’t seeing those personalities built up in the same manner; therefore, the emotional connection simply isn’t as strong.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day

Holland has done a great job bringing his version of Peter Parker to life, making him feel like a compelling, well-rounded character who audiences want to see more of. However, in each of his standalone movies, there have been multiple characters dominating screen time away from him. Whether it’s Tony Stark, Doctor Strange, or other versions of Spider-Man, it feels like Marvel Studios doesn’t have faith in Spider-Man to be the selling point of his own movie. It’s a strange decision, because Spider-Man is arguably the most well-known character that the MCU has available in terms of its global reach. He’s one of those superheroes who has broken into worldwide pop culture in a similar way to Superman, and that means he’s a character that doesn’t need all the bells and whistles that others end up getting.

Unfortunately, Marvel Studios is set to make the same mistake again with Spider-Man: Brand New Day in terms of throwing in as many characters as possible. It seems like they are trying to make every film feel like an Avengers-level event where there are lots of characters all coming together to create a must-watch story, but in reality, that isn’t what audiences want to see. Those big blockbuster, team events make sense when the story has been built up to its climax and there’s a need for it. However, fans tend to prefer movies that are grounded in reality, focusing on character and world-building rather than rushing through different scenes to ensure each person gets enough screen time. Hopefully, Spider-Man: Brand New Day will have a compelling reason for so many characters being involved, but at the moment, it seems like Marvel is doomed to repeat previous failures.
