Summary

  • Evans returned as Human Torch in Deadpool & Wolverine for a memorable performance-120
  • Marvel should have saved this appearance for Avengers: Doomsday to create a bigger impact-96
  • Evans' upcoming return to Avengers: Doomsday may not stand out due to large cast-91

When Marvel fans think about Chris Evans, it is his role as Captain America that instantly springs to mind. He's taken on the role several times in some of the biggest Marvel Studios movies of all time. But long before he took on this part, he played a different Marvel hero in Johnny Storm, who is better known to people as the Human Torch.

Evans got the chance to play the role one more time recently in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the first time. However, despite how fun it was to see him in that role once again, Marvel might have chosen the wrong movie to bring Evans back as the Human Torch.

Which Movie Did Chris Evans Return As The Human Torch In?

Deadpool & Wolverine Chris Evans As Human Torch

Evans hadn't played the role of the Human Torch since 2007's Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer until he reprised the character in 2024's Deadpool & Wolverine. He was one of many cameo appearances in that movie, but Evans was a featured part of the cast in what was an excellent performance. He brought Storm's usual arrogance but took it to another level where he was able to flex another side of himself due to the Rated R nature of the film. He was the total opposite of what fans have come to know and expect from Evans in a Marvel movie, and that's what made him so much fun to be part of. Evans was utterly different, and that helped to make the cameo appearance so much fun.

Marvel Studios Should Have Saved This Appearance For Avengers: Doomsday

It Would Have Brought Different Versions Of The Human Torch Together

Seeing Evans back as the Human Torch was an enjoyable experience, and despite how many characters were involved in Deadpool & Wolverine, everyone was discussing Evans's Fantastic Four appearance. The fact that the performance was so different from anything people have seen before is an example of why it worked so well. However, given his personality, putting him in Avengers: Doomsday as the Human Torch would have been even more impactful. It is unclear whether that's something that Marvel would be willing to put into an Avengers film, but having it in Avengers: Doomsday would have created an even bigger talking point due to how entertaining it is.

The idea of having Evans play the Human Torch in Avengers: Doomsday would have set up a very interesting moment, given that all four members of the new Fantastic Four are in this movie. Marvel would've been able to bring Evans' version together against Joseph Quinn's, and that in itself would have had everyone talking. Quinn has revealed that his version of the Human Torch is going to be slightly different in terms of personality, and seeing them appear alongside each other would have created a scene that few people would have forgotten. That's the type of moment that fans are looking for with these major Avengers movies, but without Evans taking on that role, it doesn't quite have the same level of anticipation.

Chris Evans' Upcoming Return Now Feels Too Familiar

He's Not Going To Stand Out

The idea of bringing Evans into Avengers: Doomsday makes sense on paper, as the movie is stacked with talent past and present. However, there is a fear that Evans will not stand out this time, which shouldn't be the case. Given how many characters are appearing, it is easy to imagine Evans falling into the background due to the huge personalities that are set to be involved, such as Robert Downey Jr playing Doctor Doom. Whether it's his return or all of the X-Men characters that are going to be appearing, there's no shortage of fresh faces, and that's something that is going to impact how people care about Evans. Given that he's already just had a cameo return, the excitement isn't at the same level for him being involved when compared to seeing some of the other members of the cast in Avengers: Doomsday.

It is also unknown what character Evans will be playing, although it is rumored to be Nomad. While that character has a lot of potential, it's going to end up feeling very similar to what he's already done before. That will once again stop him from standing out because there are going to be so many others who boast even grander powers and personalities. That's why Marvel used his appearance as the Human Torch in the wrong movie by bringing him out in Deadpool & Wolverine first. Having Evans turn up in Avengers: Doomsday as that character would have made an even bigger impact, as the character is so unique, and the portrayal would have ensured that everyone would have been talking about him coming out of the film.
